Book Reviews of Invincible (Star Wars: Legacy of the Force, Book 9)Book Review: I liked this book best in the LOTF series Summary: 5 Stars
Ok, first, I agree with everyone who says that it is time to give Luke, Han and Leia a backseat-which I think they are actually beginning to do. Why do I say this, ok let's think. Yoda is an alien. So he may have been able to do jedi fighting at 875 or whatever, but when Obi-Wan fought Vader in Ep. 4, he was what, 57 at most (if he was 25 in Ep 1, he would be 57 in Ep 4, and I don't think he was much older than 25, but to be conservative, let's say he was 60), and he couldn't beat a weakened Vader ("your powers are weak, old man!) (I say weakened because Vader wasn't up to snuff in the suit-even Lucas says that). So he would be about Luke's age in this book, and yet they don't seem to be ageing-even Han is running, shooting from the hip, etc)
But that aside, I think this book is great! I too am not fond of the darker, more violent stories that started with the New Jedi Order, and I'm sorry, but I hate, or at least strongly dislike Karen Traviss' writing. Yet, while I like Aaron Allston, (I love his books), Troy Denning is the one to write the conclusion. Considering the nature of the story, it needs no jokes a la Allston, but a gritty final duel and conclusion. That's what Denning delievered. His action-packed ending was short, but Ep III & Ep VI (endings in themselves) were the two shortest films and most action-packed of their respective trilogies. I like how he showed us what Jaina was feeling-this shows that she did what was necessary (at least by Star Wars morals) and wasn't turning evil herself when she went after Cadeus. Also Cadeus' final reaching out and actions are spot on (Vader was evil and even force-strangled Padme, but he truly loved his wife & son even when he was at his worst).
I do think that Fel and Daarla's roles were a bit forced, but I think Denning was told to do that for the sequels to come-it wasn't his choice (just a guess).
I think too that the "love triangle" won't be resolved insomuch as Jaina won't ever marry, and Zekk and Fel will have to move on (if Zekk hasn't moved on already! wink, wink)
I think the only problem I have with the story is that I think Tahiri is portrayed incorrectly, but her turn to the dark side may be justified in that we still don't quite know how the Riana merge affects her, and her return I think is good.
I lie-I have another gripe-I always liked how Star Wars didn't become immoral, like so many books these days. The three-some reference, and the attempted seduction of Ben was over the line! I think there is some shame on Traviss and Denning for this. But I'm not saying that romance can't come into play-which reminds me, I thought the spritely young Seha would be in it, to give Ben a teenage case of puppy love-what happened there?
The showdown between Jaina & Jacen did seem a bit too rushed, but I suppose real duels usually are.
Also for those who say that too many main characters are dying lately, think about this, no flesh and blood character lived thru all 6 films. So there! (I say that lightly, but think about it)
Summary of Invincible (Star Wars: Legacy of the Force, Book 9)No war can last forever. Now, in the long and punishing battle between the defiant champions of the New Jedi Order and the juggernaut that is the Galactic Alliance, the endgame is finally at hand. With so much lost?and nothing less than the course of the future still at stake?there can be no turning back. No matter the consequences.
The rebel cause is losing ground under the twin blows of Admiral Gilad Pellaeon?s assassination and the death of Mara Jade Skywalker. At the same time, having gained the support of the Imperial Remnant and its ruthlessly efficient forces, the Galactic Alliance, with the extraordinary power and dark brilliance of newly ascendant Sith Lord Darth Caedus at its helm, may be unstoppable. Tormented and torn between the call of duty and the thirst for vengeance, Luke has searched the Force and beheld an unspeakable vision of the galaxy enslaved under tyranny more monstrous than even Palpatine?s. Now it seems that the last, best hope lies in mobilizing the scattered Jedi for one decisive search-and-destroy mission. The objective: eliminate Darth Caedus.
It?s a plan that will be as difficult and dangerous to execute as it is daring. For Caedus is a scion of both the Skywalker and Solo bloodlines whose command of the Force surpasses even that of his grandfather
Darth Vader. There is only one who is bound by destiny to stand against him in what will surely be a duel to the death, only one with an outside chance of bringing down the dark lord who was once Jacen Solo.
Failure is not an option. The furious final moments between power and peace are here, and whoever confronts Darth Caedus will decide the outcome?and the fate of those left standing.
