From the Foreword: "...Many readers will be surprised to learn how much intermediate repertoire was composed by some of our 19th-century greats like Chopin and Liszt as well as by 20th-century educational composers. Both authors are authorities in the intermediate repertoire area; both teach piano pedagogy and practicum courses, and have worked with this body of repertoire for years. The organization of the book by period is exemplary: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary. Also included are impressionistic literature, jazz literature, multi-period collections and anthologies, and holiday literature. An ensemble literature section (music for one piano-four hands, two pianos-four hands, and two pianos-eight hands), plus materials for adult study round out the thorough coverage. The volume is made even more useful by including suggested teaching orders plus the authors' designation of extremely successful teaching literature.
