Book Review: Fact: The Author is White. Question: Is this relevant?

The author of this text is not Yoruba nor are any of his ancestors. He is of European descent--which is ok. A Caucasian person can learn from Ifa religion. However, I just thought that it was important to note for the simple fact that there are some people who are searching for spirituality and knowledge that does not just come from Africa, but is told through the voice of someone who has either grown up in Yoruba culture (in Nigeria or even places like Cuba, Brasil, and Trinidad)or is at least black.
There are people of African descent worldwide who are tired of being feed European traditions and even having to have a European medium when searching for Africa's traditions. These people are entitled to having preferences of where they want their information to come from. I recommend that a newcommer to the faith should read "Ifa Can Mend this Broken World" and "Fundamentals of the Yoruba Religion" first. There are two reasons for this: the newcommer will first experience the religion via the truest Yoruba perspective since the authors are from Yorubaland. They will learn to love and appreciate the religion through these great books. Next read "Handbook to Yoruba Concepts" and "Finding Soul on the Path of Orisa" written by African American followers and also brilliant books. In addition, the reader will have transcended from the point of suching for African knowledge by African mouths and simply love the religion for being so profound. "Inner Peace" does not touch some of the basics that a novice needs to know first and will find in the other four books mentioned.
That being said, this book is one of the most insightful texts on the Yoruba Spiritual system that I have ever read, but it should not be the first book. It really touches on the philosophical aspect of Yoruba spirituality that is often overlooked by those who want to focus on ritual and divination in a quest for exclusivity and power. I believe that in a few decades (at most) the Yoruba religion will have to establish an official canon of texts and this will be one of them.
