Perhaps the target audience for this book is absolute beginners and that's how I'm rating it. It's niether great nor bad for that level of reader. If you're looking for something more serious or professional then go with Tufte's books.

Information Design Desk Reference, approaches the design of information as simply communication. The point of view is that of people who do not have the skills or tools of a professional designer. When a poster, brochure, document or presentation needs to be prepared most people feel that they lack the ability to create what they need, to produce the kind of impact they know that their material requires. Graphic elements throughout the book complement the text with examples.
