Book Reviews of Incredible Hulk: Planet Hulk

Book Review: great book great art!
Summary: 5 Stars

let me start by saying that i have only loosely followed the hulks career. I bought a few hulk comics her and there and always found it interesting when he would turn a new color(Grey/green) or get a new personality for an old color. but i began hearing about this book from a few friends and i decided to check it out.....and i am so glad i did!

The story in this book is top notch. It really is. the writes created a great new world for the hulk to play in, except theres on catch; hulk is not "strongest one there is". At least not at first. With out trying to give away to much about the story you find out that when hulk arrives on the planet he entered some kind of "power draining portal" which left him much much weaker. for instance early on he can actually be made to bleed, which is not an easy thing to do. In fact Hulk is even made into a slave and sold as a gladiator.

Anyway over the course of the story we meet another very powerful hero from the marvel universe that has also been weakened and trapped on this world. I wont give away who it is but i think you will be pleasantly surprised when he hits the Hulk in the face with a Mace.

The hulk eventually makes friends with some fellow slaves and goes on to do some great things on this new world, but ill let you read about that on your own.

Now we all know that story isn't every thing in a comic book, the art is great as well. The colors are strong and vibrant and the hulk truly looks angry in the book.

The reason i gave this book a 5 star rating was because i found it very hard to put down. i just had to see what happened to the hulk next and the book never disappointed me. do your self a favor and just give it a shot.

Book Review: Hulk Smashin' Great
Summary: 5 Stars

Every so often, there comes a tale -- with equal parts passion and pathos, with equal parts pride and prejudice -- that not only redefines what a character has meant throughout the already visited pages upon pages of illustrated storylines but also re-establishes the hero as a dominant force for storytellers, readers, the company's universe, and (arguably) the entire comic book industry. PLANET HULK is such a masterpiece.

It's difficult to talk about the adventure without giving too many elements best left revealed and explored by the reader. This trade paperback -- collecting issues of the HULK's monthly run as well as a few additional installments from other sources -- has more welcome twists and turns than any good piece of literature could hope for. Briefly, earth's (Marvel) superheroes have reached the breaking point in their inactions with the Hulk; fearing that the 'monster' could eventually turn the immeasureable dark fury against mankind, they construct a spaceship to send him to an unpopulated world in deep space where the Hulk can live out his days in isolation. The problem: not only does it make the Hulk angry ("you won't like me when I'm angry"), but also he's delivered to the wrong planet ... this one ruled by a 'Ming-the-Merciless' type who forced his citizens to fight-to-the-death ritualistically in huge arena. Think of the movie GLADIATOR ... only in space ... with dozens of alien creatures ... and with an even unhappier ending with the smoothest cliffhanger this side of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.

Really, that's all I should say. To reveal more would truly spoil the surprise, the PLANET HULK is full of them. This is one story for the ages, and it's best experienced by the audience.

Book Review: Good smashing fun
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm not the biggest Hulk fan in the world, but this was an excellent story. Marvel's done the "send a strongman to another planet" thing before (with The Thing, in his own comic) but this is much better. The art is great, and the story, though derivative of many things (A Princess of Mars, Gladiator), has enough interesting twists to keep it interesting. Some of the pages seem choppy (was anything cut out from the original comics?) but that may be due to a limitation on pages and issues that the storyline could cover. And the world was created with a depth that you rarely see in comics--Sakaar has a detailed geography, cultures, mythos, and inhabitants. Everything works together wonderfully.

My only real complaint is that each fight or battle usually lasts all of one panel. It used to be that Hulk slugfests with, say, Rhino or the Abomination, would go on for pages as each behemoth pummeled the other in an epic brawl. Now it's one big action shot and on to the next adventure. I don't want a comic to be nothing but violence, but it's hard to think that any fight has any real importance if it ends in one page.

Still, overall, an awesome comics adventure.

Book Review: First HULK comic I've ever read. Love it.
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been a manga fan for several years now, though the only 'american' comics I read were the funnies. Recently I picked up Spider Girl at random with a gift certificate, and was re-introduced to the varvel world. As for Hulk, the only thing I remembered about it were vauge fuzzy, but warm, memories from early morning cartoons. My friends were talking about World War Hulk, mentioned this, and I bought it to find out what they were talking about.
From personal experince I can honestly say that even if you haven't read Hulk, or comics in general, the story line is easy to follow and very well written. There are twists, I didn't expect Hulk to 'dis' the people that came to rescue him, and the art is superb. This story fits as a stand alone and as part of a larger one. As cheesy as it sounds, this comic is 'incredible' and belongs in any comic/manga collection.

Book Review: Very good!
Summary: 5 Stars

I do not read a lot of Hulk or much Marvel, for that matter (I am more of a DC guy, I guess). I own a few Hulk collections and they are ok- but think that Planet Hulk is really something special. It has been a long time since I have been so thoroughly entertained by a comic. The only thing that would have made it better is if Thanos had been cast in the role of the evil emperor :) Also, the bit about Hulk holding the planet together with his bare hands was a bit over the top, but I guess if the Justice League can pull the moon around on a chain then the Hulk can keep a planet from splitting apart by grabbing onto the opposing tectonic plates! Both the writing and artwork are terrific and I recommend Planet Hulk to anyone looking for a good read.
