Book Review: Empowering and informative

There are two parts to this book. Part I is comprised of birth stories, much like reading the pregnancy journal entries with Ina May occasionally adding her comments about the birth. Part II is more informative, educating the reader about the phases and physiological processes of labor, medical interventions used and their risk, and techniques used to ease labor.
The greatest gift from this book is EMPOWERMENT. Ina May's experience adds credibility to her simple theme: "You can do it."
Part II explains the physiological changes taking place, and in turn, how the mother can assist her body. Later, Ina May identifies each of the screening and intervention methods available in the medical world along with their risks. Her theme here is that the majority of births are normal, and are safely born without medical intervention. (This underscores a theme of midwifery vs. medical model.)
Often I hear people say, "It's so different for each mother and each pregnancy!" Part I acknowledges the variability of the birth experience, and provides valuable insight from mothers writing about their births. Whether your labor is long and difficult or short and orgasmic (read more in Part II), there are stories included to show how women worked through their experience.
All in all, a great book. Highly recommended, especially if you are considering a "natural" birth.
