Book Reviews of In the Company of Cheerful Ladies: A No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency Novel (6) (The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency)Book Review: Mesmerizing Shoe Buckles & the Faultless Juggler of Stories ! Summary: 5 Stars
Alexander ("Sandy") McCall Smith is one of the cleverest of contemporary authors, BUT . . . when does he eat & sleep?
His stories are like geysers waiting for their moment to erupt. They fit neatly into several categories & each series has its own loyal following. Books featuring the #1 Ladies' Detective Agency are aimed squarely at a large segment of readers who are sure not to wait for 'hammock weather' before digging in. Exotic to most Americans, the African landscape and these adventures of the lady detectives beckon strongly.
In the 6th book of this series, Mma Precious Ramotswe is her beautiful, resourceful self WITH A DIFFERENCE; a nemesis has taken earthly shape and her clouded past becomes a dark threat to newly married happiness. The totally believable characters resonate with the author's philosophical stance. McCall Smith shares his 'take' on today's morality through the characters. They are the creation of a truly inventive mind; not, however, a simple mind. He has given readers an entire community of folks in Botswana whose culture & habits fascinate endlessly! Their amusing & sometimes embarrassng situations remind us of ridiculous predicaments in our own lives. Interwoven are bits & pieces of Mma Ramotswe's past life that conveniently fill in chunks of her background for readers who may be reading about "Precious" for the first time. All the warp & weft of her life builds on a strong foundation from her father Owen Ramotswe, whose sayings, Confucious-like, uphold her actions. The convoluted sentence structure and use of formal names are also appreciated.
There are problems for Mma Ramotswe and assistant Mma Makutsi to consider over a cup of tea and resolve at a deliberate tempo. "Precious" treasures her "tiny white van" and when it is stolen she is brought to tears. Some of the other concerns - - including the weaknesses of apprentice Charlie & the intruder who escapes minus his trousers - - don't shake her as much. We love reading about everyone's foibles and it becomes therapeutic. The books are a TONIC with no bitter after-taste - - like reading today's newspapers, for example.
While the author dishes up "comfort food" his Biblical phrasing persuades us to recognize goodness in our neighbors & even in ourselves. There are so many comical 'turns' that readers will continue to smile long after the book is closed, or the tape is finished playing. Any part, or ALL of this series, would be great choices for listening during long-distance travel & will put aside, at least for the moment, complaints about the price of Gas! These wonderful books convince us that Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, the husband of Precious Ramotswe, is correct in saying "A life without stories would be no life at all." Reviewer mcHAIKU urges you to follow the threads and discover where these tales take you. Some mysteries remain unanswered: WHY is it that the colorful pants hung on the clothesline, as pictured on the cover of "Cheerful Ladies" . . . still show the creases of unlaundered pants?
