Book Reviews of In God We Trust: All Others Pay CashBook Review: Memoirs of a kinder gentler humor. Summary: 5 Stars
Every Christmas season, I'm reminded of the work of Jean Shepherd when the movie A Christmas Sotry airs on TV. A funny, likeable movie on its own , it always brings me back to my childhood in the 60's, sitting on the edge of my bed with my father, listening nightly to Mr Shepherd's wonderful monologues on WOR radio in NY. In God We Trust.. is a compliation of some of the hundreds of storys told by Shepherd during his radio days. Highly recommended, it will make you laugh out loud and should have special memories for those 'boomers' from the NY area whe grew up listening to this funny funny man.
Book Review: "In God We Trust" is a Great Book from a Great Writer. Summary: 5 Stars
Jean Shepherd is dead, but his genius lives on. Shepherd is one of the great writers of our time. Nobody has ever written with more insight into the child's mind. I could rave on about the literary merits of his work, but let's cut to the chase... "In God We Trust, All Other's Pay Cash" is laugh out loud funny! If you were lucky enough to have heard Shepherd on WOR radio it's even better, since Shep's voice will echo in your head. I love Jean Shepherd. I wanted to be Jean Shepherd. Buy this book and pass it on.
Book Review: Rare Gen-X'er who LOVES this book! Summary: 5 Stars
Ever since I saw the movie "A Christmas Story" for the first time on TNT I fell in love with the eloquent writing of Jean Shepherd. The book "In God We Trust; All Others Pay Cash" is the funniest and most clever of all of the books I have ever read. For all of you twenty-year-olds who think this book is just another 50's boring sock hop cheesy story, think again. This book will have you on the floor in convulsions because of the non-stop laughter. BUY THIS BOOK :)
Book Review: best Summary: 5 Stars
Shepherd as clear and crisp as when his storied craft was developing before our very ( and not so very) adolescent ears and eyes. There is something very archtypical in the Raulphie, Flick, The Old Man, Mom, Winnie Randie and the enevitable unobtainable Wanda Hickey that we all coveted and set our eyes on the reality of our own fragile and wonderful lifes!
We love ya' Shep!
Long live "I Libertine" The 1st Virtually produced instant success!
Book Review: OUTSTANDING! Summary: 5 Stars
I listened to Jean Shepherd on WOR radio when I lived in NJ. Jean was THE funniest personality I had/have ever heard. Stories about when he was a kid, when he was in the Army, all kinds of neat, funny stories.
When this book came out, I got an autographed copy in Newark, NJ one day, still have it too. Outstanding tales about youth in the "better days" of America! You will LOVE this book if you like "Christmas Story" on TV every year.
