Book Reviews of In God We Trust: All Others Pay CashBook Review: Growing up again. Summary: 5 Stars
Reading Jean Shepherd's books are like re-living growing up in the post war years(WWII). I grew up in the East and it really wasn't much different than Shepherd's accounts of growing up inj the Mid-West. Who didn't want a genuine Red Ryder BB gun? School, decoder rings, Ovaltine, bullies, puberty, the long wait from Thanksgiving to Christmas. I bought the book after seeing the movie "A Christmas Story" over and over and over. In this rare case, the movie really is as good as the books it was taken from. I just had to go out and buy a Red Ryder BB gun for old times sake. I highly recommend any of Shepherd's works. They evoke warm memories of youth long past.
Book Review: A CLASSIC TO BE READ ALOUD ... IN SHEPHERD'S VOICE Summary: 5 Stars
Many readers remember Shepherd from his radio days and all of these stories have been told in different ways over the air so the best way to read them is to imagine him reading it to you (in his voice) as though you're huddled next to that old radio or snuggled under covers listening to a little transistor. Mr. Shepherd's recent death only highlights the lack of real, thoughtful and off-the-cuff humor in today's media. Some of these stories may seem familiar to anyone who's seen A CHRISTMAS STORY because they're based on Shepherd's tales in this, his first collected fiction. May he rest in peace and be given the proper respect his humor deserves.
Book Review: Stories that inspired "A Christmas Story" Summary: 5 Stars
A marvelous, nostalgic and funny series of short stories by writer/humorist/radio star Jean Sheperd. Many of these stories appeared originally in Playboy magazine, and later combined to generate the plot of the classic Christmas movie "A Christmas Story." Sheperd's unique powers of description are unparalleled, and sometimes serve to hide the subtle satire that he employs, using tall tales of his childhood in Depression-Era Indiana to jab at our own modern society. And for anyone in the Northeast who grew up listening to Sheperd's nightly radio program on WOR, reading these stories again will bring you to yet another level of nostalgia.
Book Review: Humorous look at life in "The Region." Summary: 5 Stars
Living all of my life in Northwest Indiana, I've always had a soft spot for Jean Shepherd and his satirical look at life in "The Region." Although many of the mannerisms portrayed in this book might seem vastly over-exaggerated, let me assure you that they often are not! Beer, bowling scores, cars, high school basketball and the mills still run paramount here. This is a wonderfully funny, dysfunctional book and should be required reading for anyone who plans on moving to, or even simply visiting, this area. After finishing it, I knew I'd never look at this place the same, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Book Review: Brings back the Confusing humor of YOUR Childhood. Summary: 5 Stars
This is not a laid back easy reader, you will be into this and snicker here and there reflecting on your own childhood. So much went into putting this together, but what's so evident is Jean was a sharp person, very aware and able to put real life on paper that lives up to best seller quality. I was left awed as I closed the book after all the laughter, this is a work of a very awesome mind. I did not laugh again about any of the particular events in the book when I was reminded of them from dailey events, I wondered how a person like Jean was so able. I would like to recommend reading SB 1 or God By Karl Mark Maddox.
