Book Reviews of In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto

Book Review: Outstanding Book - but it will make you mad!
Summary: 5 Stars

I first purchased the author's newer book, "Food Rules," and I liked it a lot. But I found myself wanting a bit more depth, as that book is very high level. This book provides what Food Rules is missing, and I will likely purchase the author's earlier books after reading this one.

I have been looking for a book like In Defense of Food for several years, as I suspected what the author is confirming for me.

If you are concerned about your diet, how to shop for groceries, how to eat more healthy foods, etc., then both In Defense of Food and Food Rules offer great tips and suggestions. They will also likely get you upset about how much crap is in the grocery stores today, and how hard it is to find real food (versus what the author calls edible food-like substances).

Book Review: Good, Scary, But Good
Summary: 5 Stars

Through the years we have all read various items about the food industry to some degree or the other.

In this book Pollan brings it altogether in an updated (meaning recently written book) about the food industry and how it affects us.

More importantly, it shows you how to avoid things that are not good for you, and tips you off about things that you thought may be good.

I have been trying to eat better, still have a way to go, but this book does keep me thinking everytime I am shopping and I think I am making better decisions. I am not 100% there, but moving in the right direction.

A very good book, scary in the fact that many of these things are going on in what we eat, but good.

Book Review: Common Sense and Fantastic!
Summary: 5 Stars

"In Defense of Food" is overloaded with the common sense on eating we've come to ignore. This book provides a great wake up call to the freakish plastic packaged low-fat "food" that marketers have convinced us are among our healthiest choices. I believe eating naturally from day 1 would drastically reduce the amount of chronic illness that's on the rise in the U.S. I have Crohn's Disease (possibly brought on by an overload of refined carbohydrates and sugar), and am now committed to eating real, natural, nutritious food. This book is a good complement to Elaine Gottschall's "Breaking the Vicious Cycle," which I read around the same time as I began the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Read "In Defense of Food," and here's to your health!

Book Review: A "Must Read" for Anyone Who Eats
Summary: 5 Stars

"In Defense of Food" is a very well written discussion of the author's investigation of the commercialization of our food supply. I was attracted to this book as I've longed believed somewhere deep down that our diets played a large role in the management of our overall health. Mr. Pollan's writing is entertaining at times, very illuminating, engaging, and offers just the correct amount of facts to have one back away from their cellophaned, never to spoil, no-bake snack cakes and realize just what they are putting into their mouths may not be food but a conglomeration of chemicals and by-products designed to have a really, really - really - long shelf life. A recommended read to anyone who eats.

Book Review: This book changed the way I view food
Summary: 5 Stars

I can't say enough good things about this book--and in fact, many other 5 star reviewers have already said the things I would say myself, so I will not go into a lot of detail here in the review.

It has changed the way I view food. I am going to be conscious in my choices, and I am going to change my attitude toward cost, and pay more for higher quality food now. This means buying more produce, buying meats and dairy products that come from animals that are pastured, buying less processed food, shelling out a little extra for organic when I can, and being more deliberate in going to farmers' markets.

Buy/borrow the book and read it. It cannot NOT make an impact on you!!
