Book Reviews of Iceberg (Dirk Pitt Adventure)Book Review: So funny I peed my pants Summary: 1 Stars
Iceberg, by Clive Cussler, is one of the funniest books I have ever read. At certain parts of the book I was literally gasping for breath at the absurdity of what Mr. Cussler has written. I take my hat off to Mr. Cussler for taking the time to include every cliche known to mankind in his novel, from our cool, calculating, and dashing young hero, to the stunningly beautiful villainess. In several scenes our hero narrowly avoids his demise by using his wits and quick reflexes, perhaps Mr. Cussler was trying to keep us on the edge of our seats "Wow, our dashing young hero Dirk just took out a fighter jet with a little unarmed helicopter! He's my hero!", but he had me rolling on the floor, passing out from laughing so hard. The only reason I even bothered to finish the book was because I was absolutley amazed at the level of crap that could be turned out by a famous author and still be a best seller. So I thank you Mr. Cussler, for providing me with countless hours (I reread the really funny parts several times) of entertainment.
Book Review: gimme a break Summary: 1 Stars
First off, change that one star I had to give to the no stars this atrocious crapfest deserves. This is truly one of the four or five worst novels I've ever tortured myself with. I still can't believe I got there, but the moment I finished the last page I literally threw the book against the wall, I felt so dissatisfied and cheated as a reader. The only thing worse than, "Oooh, I know where to find the Central American presidents in Disneyland, they must be riding the Pirates of the Caribbean," is the stupid sex change. I'd love to take two copies of this book, put them in lunch bags, set one on Mr. Cussler's doorstep and the other on his editor's, set them afire and run and hide and watch giggling as they spatter themselves in brown stomping them out. The only way to force publishers to raise their standards is to stop buying this garbage. I want my money back, along with the wasted hours of my life.
Book Review: Utterly Ridiculous Summary: 1 Stars
Ridiculous. What a ridiculous story. One of his earlier efforts, Clive Cussler fortunately, went on to write much better books. The plot is contrived and does not hold together well, the characters are unsympathetic, and there's an unfortunate amount of chauvinistic behavior towards women. The story line is not worth going into, it's never believable, not for a single minute.
The Dirk Pitt character is extremely unlikable for a main character, I'm not sure if Cussler thinks he might appeal to some men as an alter ego they want to be like. However, the author is not able to pull this off - Dirk Pitt comes across as a kind of third-rate James Bond - he has the killer instinct, but none of the cool sophistication. Reading Iceberg left me cold.
Book Review: Uninspiring, predictable, drone drone drone... Summary: 1 Stars
There's not much to say about this novel, other than that the author displayed a complete lack of inspiration, the main twist of the book revolving around a sex change. The plot was predictably simple, characters one-dimensional, I could go on. The more Cussler you read, the more you see that it follows a regimented formula: suave and comic hero, multiple love interests bombarded by macho displays of affection, a near death experience or two, and an unbelievable scheme to save the day... Book Review: Blood & Guts Summary: 1 Stars
Cussler's non-fiction is good, but his fictional hero, Dirk Pitt, takes and hands out too much punishment for my taste. After reading three of his books, I've had enough
