Wilson Creek, Maine is getting ready for the XMAS holidays and as Sheriff Harlan McQueen awaits the arrival of his son Gabriel who's a military policeman in the army... a predicted ice storm heading to the area has picked up additional strength. Gabriel who is a widower... has rearranged his life by having his beloved seven-year-old son Sam live with his parents in Wilson Creek while he is stationed in North Carolina... so he can provide a more stable upbringing for his adored son. As the Sheriff and town readies for the dreaded ice storm... there seems to be one resident/visitor in the general area that the close-knit town is concerned about... and that is Lolly Helton. Lolly is the daughter of the former mayor... and a childhood classmate of Gabriel. She is staying at a secluded family home outside of town. When Gabriel arrives in town he is barely allowed out of his truck to stretch his legs... before he is diligently sent back out of town to find Lolly and make sure she's safe.
The author starts building a wonderful web of interest on numerous levels simultaneously. She delicately educates readers that have not experienced the brunt of an ice-storm first hand... as to the brutality of *CRACKLING-BRANCHES-AND-CRACKLING-TREES*... and of the un- drivable... and almost un-walkable conditions... the freezing winds... and the fear of your skin getting wet under multiple layers of clothing. Then we're introduced to Darwin and Niki two methamphetamine (Also known as *ICE*.) addicts who are "tweaking"... haven't slept in days... and have guns loaded and ready outside a grocery store they plan to rob in this same small town. At the last second Niki sees a black Mercedes... and she flips out and says: "THAT WOMAN LOOKED AT ME." That woman happens to be Lolly. So Niki... always looking ahead... figures a woman with a car like that probably has more money in her purse than that little store has in its register.
The author then creatively juggles the meth-heads capturing Lolly... Gabriel finding Lolly imprisoned... helping her escape with the undaunted meth-heads in pursuit guns "a-blazing"... with "ice" running through their veins... they have more resiliency than "THE TERMINATOR"... and through it all... the unrelenting frigid and dangerous environmental conditions. A nice literary artistic touch is the method in which the author periodically revisits an action scene from the viewpoint of more than one character. This is a wonderfully fluid story that at one-hundred-ninety-eight pages is longer than a "short-story"... but shorter than a novel. If you are planning on reading this on a cross-country flight you probably need a second book for the return flight. With the detailed character studies... and the unlimited outdoor effects available in film making today... this has the potential to be made into a captivating movie.
