Book Reviews of I Walked the Line: My Life with Johnny

Book Review: An okay read
Summary: 3 Stars

After watching Walk The Line, I was really interested in the life of Johnny Cash. So, I got on the internet and found this book. It really sparked my interest and I couldn't wait to purchase it. The parts that Vivian wrote herself about her time with Johnny are really interesting and make an easy read. But, 95% of the book is just love letters from Johnny. Some are difficult to read and they become repetitive and then I lost a little interest. I'm not knocking their love or time together, I just wish she would have written more from her perspective and not made the majority of the book just letters.

Book Review: I Walk The LIne
Summary: 3 Stars

I thought it had way too many personal letters in it. I became very bored with all of that and finally skipped to the end to read the outcome

Book Review: LaLa Land
Summary: 2 Stars

Did Vivian deliver June's eulogy? She didn't say in the book.

I know Vivian's daughter here has said to review the book and not her mother, but sorry, if you write something this personal, people are going to review you and your life. And the book on its own is rather weak. It should've just been the letters from Johnny if they were going to occupy 3/4s of the book.

This book just made me sad. Yes, that Vivian was heartbroken when her marriage broke up. But while Johnny no doubt felt guilty about being with June in the beginning, that's who he truly wanted to be with. Vivian tries to claim that June had all this control over Johnny (and it was "devil-driven"), but Johnny never seemed to waver about his choice, even in Vivian's version of events. And I just don't go along with Johnny as this poor soul caught in June's evil web.

Johnny and June were together for 30something years so for Vivian to say that she should have fought harder to save her marriage (in her regrets at the end) is the saddest part of the book for me. Every time she tried to talk to him about their troubled marriage, Johnny didn't want to deal with it and usually just left. So to say this at the end of her life is rather bewildering. It's as if she's still in that LaLa Land of when they first met.

Another regret of Vivian is that she never got counseling. And she's right. She should have. Because a few sessions with a therapist (preferably a middle aged woman who has been through a divorce) would've given her perspective to where she wouldn't be regretting fighting for something decades ago that was obviously completely lost.

Book Review: Somewhat indifferent....
Summary: 2 Stars

When I chose to read this book, I expected a more personal account of Vivian's (and her childrens') life with Johnny Cash. I appreciate the letters sent from a young soldier to the love of his life, but things are often much different in reality than they are when two people are across the world from one another and only corresponding thru the mail. I truly question whether John & Vivian's marriage would have been any different, without the success of Johnny Cash or June Carter. They were both very young at the time of their marriage, were not very well acquainted prior to John's deployment, and in general it was just a different time in America. I did not find anything overly harsh towards June Carter in this book, and I also found it interesting to learn about the first Mrs. Cash as a person, mother and wife.

Book Review: Very different from Johnny Cash's books
Summary: 2 Stars

I just finished reading this book. And yes I do find that it was a very tragic thing for Vivian to go through. Most of the book is letters and of course Johnny seemed to be in love with her. But how do we now that they really were his letters for her? I've read his books also. And in his books he tells of things that happened in Germany that were very important to him.
What I don't understand is why he would not write about that to Vivian. Thats what makes me wonder if those letters are the real ones. And really, did she have to be that harsh to June. I was very disappointed that she would write some hurtful things when June wasn't around to defend herself. Very disappointing.
