Book Reviews of I Love This Guy: The 4th Least I Could Do CollectionBook Review: Best. Comic. EVER. Summary: 5 Stars
Before I begin to put every last bit of the Shakespeare I'm not into this review, let me say that BFE isn't paying me for this, but they should, because I'm going to be so positive about it that nobody will believe they're not.
I've read a lot of comic strips (and comic books). Least I Could Do is hands down, the best. It's written intelligently, but with a wry immaturity. Although half the time it's about, y'know, Rayne having sex, and spends a lot of time to that effect, it keeps even those jokes varied enough to please, which deserves an award.
The series has only been getting better as it goes on. And since this is the latest book (as of this review), it only follows that this is the best LICD collection ever, and is thus the best book in history.
Allow me to share my math with you, proving the point:
BEST COMIC + BEST BOOK OF SAID COMIC = BEST BOOK EVER.
In this book, the characters are all well-established, old friends to us, and the jokes can draw on that, so they do. Every strip is guaranteed at least one big laugh, and sometimes, if you're paying attention, you'll get one every panel. On the other hand, the book also delves into a couple of characters more deeply than in the past. At one point (Hi, Spirit Keira!), this gets a little heavyhanded for a storyline, but even that plot is more consistently amusing than most comics at their best.
Then, occasionally, the book suckerpunches you with a real insight. And I don't mean a light slap; I mean out of nowhere, it slams the vicious brass knuckles of truth into your vulnerable kidney. You'll know those moments when you see them.
Besides the writing, the art is wonderful. The amount of effort Lar puts into his work is remarkable. He doesn't just do a bunch of talking heads; he makes the art really contribute to the strip, not just exist to tell the dialogue. Always watch the backgrounds and what the characters are doing what they're talking.
Of course, that's all about the strips in the book. What about what makes this book, as an object, worthwhile? I'll start with the production quality. This is a well-made book. Bound nicely, on great paper, with vivid colors. No skimping on this one.
Like the previous three, it's packed full of commentary from the author and artist. Just quick little asides. They pointed out several things that I never noticed and added a little background that showed how the strips were influenced by life, which I find interesting, although some people might rather not know.
As a last bonus, the book include a few outtakes (often Lar messing with Sohmer) and a number of original/in-progress sketches.
Did you actually read this review? Yeesh, just buy the book already. You've already wasted more time reading this review than it'll take you to get the book shipped to you.
