Book Reviews of I Drink for a Reason

Book Review: Lil Davey Cross is all growed up!
Summary: 5 Stars

David Cross' first album, Shut Up You F***ing Baby! came out in 2002 and was hilarious. Then, in 2004, It's Not Funny came out - also hilarious. David Cross is a very funny man. Actually, before both those stand-up comedy albums, he was half of the hosts of Mr. Show With Bob and David - which, for anyone unfamiliar, is the funniest show ever broadcast on TV (although - it's not TV, it's HBO! Am I right?)

Well, after 2004, I didn't really see anything come from David Cross other than some acting. Sure, he was in the TV show Arrested Development - hilarious! - but we didn't get to taste any of his succulent ideas. Well, Arrested Development got cancelled and then we REALLY didn't get anything from David - at least worth checking out. That was until 2007, after the Comedians of Comedy released a documentary, when the Comedians of Comedy Live at the Troubadour came out. It was funny to some, I'm sure, but I felt the short part of the DVD of David Cross' stand-up was fairly lacking and not particularly funny. A bit of a bummer since this was all I was getting since 2004. (This is not a review of the DVD, but specifically about David's part).

Well, this book is David back to his hilarity! It is much more like his stand-up than Mr. Show with Bob and him. It makes sense since it basically him talking, but in word form - as opposed to him and a group of other like-minded individuals putting on costumes and acting out scenes in word form.
The book is similar to Michael Ian Black's My Custom Van. It is a bunch of "essays" (I don't know if they are called that in this book). However, the difference (other than that this is by David and not Michael) is many "essays" segue into the next essay or call back a previous one. I don't think that really matters, but it is something interesting to note and also makes this more like a book than him just throwing a bunch of random things he wrote through out his life at someone to type them up and bind it all into one collection.

The book is, really, pretty much exactly as if David Cross' voice doesn't exist, but you are still hearing his stand-up. It is full of rants and various observations and some entries (like the Top Ten List of Top Ten Lists) that seem, admittedly, more funny as a concept than actually reading the list. Although, there are some weak-ish spots - it is overall good.

One way to think of it is that the book would have been worth just as much and been stronger with out the "weak" entries - so by having the weak entries, you are getting more for your money. See how that works?

I would have to recommend all the Mr. Show DVDs (unfortunately pricey) and David's stand-up comedy albums more than this, but if you have those - this! I recommend it much more than David's stand-up DVD (that isn't of his stand-up, but of his touring to do his stand-up) and David's section of the Comedians of Comedy Live at the Troubadour DVD.

Summary of I Drink for a Reason

After a decade spent in isolation in the Ugandan jungles thinking about stuff, David Cross has written his first book. Known for roles on the small screen such as "never-nude" Tobias Funke on Arrested Development and the role of "David" in Mr. Show With Bob And David, as well as a hugely successful stand-up routine full of sharp-tongued rants and rages, Cross has carved out his place in American comedy. Whether deflating the pomposity of religious figures, calling out the pathetic symbiosis of pseudo-celebrity and its leaching fandom, or merely pushing the buttons of the way-too-easily offended P.C. left or the caustic, double-standard of the callous (but funnier) right, Cross has something to say about everyone, including his own ridiculous self.

Now, for the first time, Cross is weaving his media mockery, celebrity denunciation, religious commentary and sheer madness into book form, revealing the true story behind his almost existential distaste of Jim Belushi ("The Belush"), disclosing the up-to-now unpublished minutes to a meeting of Fox television network executives, and offering up a brutally grotesque run-in with Bill O'Reilly. And as if this wasn't enough for your laughing pleasure in these troubled times, some of the pieces splinter off with additional material being created online in exclusive video and animated web content created solely for the book-a historical first (presumably)!

With a mix of personal essays, satirical fiction posing as truth, advice for rich people, information from America's least favorite Rabbi and a top-ten list of top-ten lists, I DRINK FOR A REASON is as unique as the comedian himself, and cannot be missed.
