Book Review: a fun read
Summary: 5 Stars
Many readers are confused by the relationship between Hunter's Planet and War. It seems to me that both were meant to be book 2 in the series (if the events in Hunter's Planet took place, then the events in War could not have taken place and vice versa). So in 3 book series we essentially have a book 1 (Prey) followed by two versions of book 2.
I never liked the Machiko character because the idea of a human (male or female) surviving in predator society strikes me as ludicrous. According to the books, these creatures are 2.5m tall, incredibly fast, strong, agile, tough (you name it), and vicious in battle. How could a human survive, much less get good at their way of life, which places a premium on physical ability? This however is pretty much my only gripe with the book and indeed with the series.
Ignoring personal bias, I admit this book served its purpose very well. It was entertaining, it had action, and it had aliens, predators, and guys with guns. I also felt it is the stronger sequel compared to War.
The shorty character in Hunter's Planet is more dangerous than the version in War, who comes off as a bumbling villain.
- I found the characters in War to be more bland.
- I actually thought the Attila character in Hunter's was "different" and interesting.
- I liked the idea of "buggers" although I know a lot of fans absolutely hate it.
- Bakuub was an interesting character.
and finally the predators seemed a bit more competent in Hunter's than in War, although I would've liked a bit more aliens vs predator action and not just supercyborgaliens vs predator action
On a more objective scale I'd give this book 3.5 or four out of five, but since this is a personal review, and I did enjoy the book a whole lot I give it a 5
