Book Reviews of Huevos verdes con jamónBook Review: ¡Me gusta mucho este libro! Summary: 5 Stars
After I had read this book to my nieces and nephews, my nine-year-old nephew picked up "Corre, perro, corre" by P.D. Eastman and read it all the way through in English, including "me gusta," which he had not heard prior to hearing this book. Reading is a great language teacher!I asked the kids why the main character's name is Juan Ramón instead of Sam, and my nephew said immediately, "Well, it has to rhyme with jamón, of course." I had purchased this book for my students, but it was obvious I was going to have to get another for my nieces and nephews! At least I have no problem knowing what to get them for birthdays and Christmas gifts! (They certainly don't need any more toys!)
Book Review: Clever Translation Summary: 5 Stars
This is a very well done adaptation of Green Eggs and Ham into Spanish. The translator takes some license with key phrases (e.g. "Sam I am" becomes "Juan Ramon"), but by doing so manages to preserve the integrity of the original's rhymes and rhythm. This is the best adaptation of a Dr. Seuss work into Spanish that I have encountered.
My Spanish reading level is low, so it took me a few tries to master the story, but once I did my 13 month old loved it. It scans just as charmingly as the original. It's too soon to judge its influence on my daughter, but this translation has definitely improved my Spanish vocabulary and pronunciation. I highly recommend it.
Book Review: Phenomenal translation makes Huevos Verdes con Jamon a real treat to read Summary: 5 Stars
Dr. Seuss was such a gifted children's books writer, he knows how to keep kids engaged and amused -and adults too! Aida Marcuse (the translator) did a phenomenal job translating this one. IMO it's even more fun than the original version in English. Though often not the literal words since that would be impossible, the clever translation nevertheless conveys the meaning accurately while still keeping the rhymes and the flow of the story. It's such a fun read, my three-year old son asks for it often. We've been endlessly entertained reading this. Nos gusta mucho Huevos Verdes con Jamón, gracias, gracias Dr. Seuss & Aida Marcuse -this is a real treat!
Book Review: The translation couldn't be better... Summary: 5 Stars
The translators have done a WONDERFUL job with this book. Obviously Spanish does not have the same rhythm as English so I know they had quite a task before them, but they met the challenge. I'm so glad I'll have one of my favorite childhood books in my husband's native language to share with our future children. I'm sure our kids will have even more fun since my husband's name is Juan Ramón! I've already used it several times in Spanish classes that I've taught--to children and college students. Another challenge met by one of the translators: ¡Oh, cuán lejos llegarás! (Oh, the places you'll go!)
Book Review: Delightful to read!! Summary: 5 Stars
We had the English version of this book before finding the Spanish one and couldn't imagine the Spanish version could be as much fun as the original. Boy, were we pleasantly surprised! The translations are fantastic -- not a literal translation in all instances but excellently done to preserve Dr. Seuss' great rhyming tradition. Our 18 month old loves to hear us read it and I'm certain the rhythmic verses have a lot to do with it! The illustrations are also colorful, as with most Dr. Seuss books. I hope more Spanish-version Seuss books come out. Highly recommended!
