Book Review: How to Raise the Perfect Owner!

I enjoy Cesar Millan's books for many reasons, but I admit I am partial to his latest book on bringing up a puppy. This is not your typical "how-to" book; Cesar does not lecture and he does not patronize the reader. Instead, Cesar shares with the reader his own learning process and his own observations!
I have been a fan of the Dog Whisperer since the first season and an avid reader of his books since the publication of Cesar's Way in 2006. Even though his previous books have touched on a dog's breed as part of its psychological and behavioral make-up, in this book, Cesar goes into in depth the effect that a dog's breed has on the individual dog's personality without contradicting his own belief that dogs are animal first, then dog and only then are they representative of their breed.
The individual puppies he has chosen for his experiment in puppy raising are very distinct: from "Daddy's boy" Junior, the handsome young pit bull in a tuxedo, to the irrepressable miniature Schnauzer Angel, to the slightly goofy, water-repellent Golden Lab Marley to the indefatigable and curious Mr. President, Cesar's "fab four" present him with almost every situation a new puppy owner can encounter.
Cesar's approach to working with dogs -- and now puppies -- is more physical than many trainers like, but to me his way makes so much sense. Animals relate to one another as much by touch and physical contact as by scent or sound. As a civilization, we have grown away from physical contact -- and this diminishes us. Cesar's methods in handling puppies often reflects the way a mother dog handles her babies and how other dogs give out correction and affection to one another. Cesar's affection for the puppies is never in question -- either in his words or in the many wonderful pictures that accompany the text.
Most of all, though, Cesar's new book is about us -- what we should look for when we choose a puppy, how we should behave so that we do not encourage problem behaviors, and how our actions when a dog is young can prevent the onset of the problems that bring many people to trainers to "fix" their dogs.
Millan and Peltier make a great team, coming up with a writing style that is easy to read and readily communicates the points Millan wishes to make. I heartily recommend this book for anyone considering acquiring a puppy, whether from a shelter or from a RESPONSIBLE breeder, or for anyone wanting to know more about raising dogs in general. This is a great read and a great addition to anyone's personal collection!
