Asch's and Caplin's How to Cheat in Photoshop Elements 8 is a handy book for a variety of Photoshop ventures. With its clear, concise steps (and very helpful keyboard shortcuts), this book covers everything from simple image adjustments to full-blown photo manipulations. The best thing about this book is that it not only covers topics such as lighting effects, painting shadows, adding fireworks, and collages, it also goes over practical questions many Photoshop users have, like which digital cameras to consider purchasing, possible careers in the image-processing field, Elements versus the full edition of Photoshop, image sizing in relation to pixels, and places on the web to find stock images for practice.
Many of the projects are very realistic, especially the tasks that involve super-imposing images or blending photos together to create a new scene. Especially helpful are the articles about turning day to night, adding flashlight illuminations, and adding believable speed lines to a still shot. Unfortunately, some of the projects look fake and impractical, such as the smoke, rainbow, old paper, fire, and satin tutorials. (Don't worry though - what the book lacks is easily made up for with the amazing guides on creating wood grain, `cosmetic surgery', chrome, stamp, stone carving, stained glass, torn paper, and neon sign tutorials).
This book is a great resource for people interested in combining photos - all the tools and procedures necessary to make adjustments are thoroughly explained, and are constantly referred back to in further, more advanced assignments later on in the book. A lot of basic concepts are included as well, such as working with RAW, importing layers, and color adjustments.
Affordable and informative, How to Cheat in Photoshop Elements 8 is a great guidebook filled with tips for inexperienced beginners and moderately challenging projects for seasoned users.
