Book Review: Great guide to starting a law practice
Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great book on starting a law practice, especially for new lawyers at the start of their careers. One of the things I liked about it the most is that there is no fluff or padding in this book. This book tells you what you need to know in a concise and organized manner, and then moves on to the next topic.
There are several chapters of this book that are particularly strong. The chapter on selecting an office location and the chapter on how to set your fees provided some great suggestions and guidance. I also thought the chapter on marketing a law practice was right on point, and it gave me some ideas I had not considered before. The last chapter in the book provides a number of forms which are very useful in organizing information obtained from clients and in handling the basic needs of operating a practice.
As for weaknesses in the book, I'd say that the chapter on office supplies seemed to end a bit abruptly, but otherwise it provided very useful checklists and recommendations. I also thought that the chapter on office stationery was a little short and could have been expanded. However, the advice it contained was helpful and relevant.
Overall, this is the best book I've seen on starting a law practice. It appears to be written primarily for new lawyers or law students who want to start their own law practice early in their legal careers, and it lays out everything they need to do to accomplish that goal. These are the kinds of insights and suggestions that are not provided in law school, and can only be gained from experience - or from reading this book. Five stars for this one.
