Book Reviews of How-To Hydroponics, Fourth Edition

Book Review: Mixed review
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this book hoping to get plans I could use for building my own hydroponics system. While I was not impressed by the selection of systems presented in the book, the detail in this portion of the book is adequate and the instructions are easy to follow. If someone desires to build a system of the types presented this could be a great resource. Overall the writing style of the book is good, however, the authors knowledge is often lacking. He seems to have a very poor understanding of chemistry and physics in particular. If you want to learn more about lighting, nutrient solutions, etc. you will be better served ordering a different book.

Book Review: Not one color photo inside
Summary: 3 Stars

Remember this rule, never judge a book by it's cover. In this case, the cover makes the book look very interesting. The bright vivid color pictures, high gloss cover, etc. However, once I got this in the mail, I was disappointed to find all photos inside are black and white. It makes it difficult to even see the details in the photo that the author describes.

Other than that, this book has been quite helpful.

Book Review: poor B&W quality
Summary: 3 Stars

I've seen the colorful pdf version of the book and I was very disappointed with the poor black and white quality of the printed version. Otherwise, this is a great book for beginners and it'll allow you to understand the basic principles and build some hydroponics systems easily.

Book Review: Nothing extraordinary
Summary: 2 Stars

I was expecting a good quality book with lots of information but I found some general info and poor print quality. This book is as good as its cover goes. There are more informative books on the subject for just a fraction of that price!!!

Book Review: Gives vague concept about Hydroponics, but that's all...
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought the 3rd edition of "How to Hydroponics" years ago. At first, I thought this is a good book for beginners. Soon, I bought several more books, and found that other books have more details necessary for beginners, too.

In addition, I found logical errors in Hydroponic Nutrient Recipes section. There are three nutrient recipes; vegetative, fruiting, and flowering nutrient. Comparing the three recipes, I found that the amount of P increased from 5.67 to 7.97, but the amount of Monopotassium Phosphate(KH2PO4), the only source of P, are all the same as 1.39gram for the three nutrients.

I asked about this contradction to Futuregarden several times, but got no responses yet. If they really wanted to give the reader some knowledge, they must have let me know. But I think they didn't because they had thought that when people know the recipes, their sales of ready-made nutrients may decrease.

My conclusion : this book is only a brochure of the products they sell at Futuregarden!
