Book Reviews of Horus Rising (Warhammer 40,000 Novels: Horus Heresy)Book Review: Great book for WH40k fans! Summary: 5 Stars
The Horus Heresy is a fascinating and important part of the WH40k world and in these new series of books it will shed to light the personnages involved and situations that led to that horrific and tragic event. This first book of the trilogy written by the fantastic Dan Abnett will bring to light those key events plus a close up look at some Primarchs whom little is known. I particularly liked how Abnett made Horus though super-human still display very human weaknesses. The final few chapters are riveting and I simply couldn't put it down until I finished. This book is highly recommended and a must read for any WH40k fan or any sci-fi fan!
Book Review: Best Warhammer 40k book yet! Summary: 5 Stars
I had read a few Warhammer 40k books before starting in on the Horus Heresy series (the 'Eisenhorn' trilogy, 'Let the Galaxy Burn', and 'Mechanicum'). Being familiar with Dan Abnett's style, I knew that the book would be good. I found the first two chapters to be a bit confusing - probably because many of the main characters in the series are being introduced for the first time, and the plot is complex. And the entire first half of the book seemed a bit slow. But by the second half, I was fully drawn in. By the end of the book I was blown away, and I can honestly say that the story is a work of genius. I highly recommend it!
Book Review: Finally, the Heresy as it was meant to be told. Summary: 5 Stars
While the story of the Horus Heresy has always been eluded to in snippets throughout Warhammer 40,000 publications, the full story has never actually been told. Dan Abnet does a great service to the tale with his detailed description of the favoured son Horus and the rise of his legion. This is an excellent beginning to what I can only hope will be a long & successful series. My only criticism to offer is the conspicuous absence of some of the more prevelant primarchs & their legions in the opeining novel. I am optimistic that will change though.

Book Review: Excellent Start Summary: 5 Stars
I admit, I was skeptical when I heard that GW was going to take on the most important and mysterious event in the entire 40K universe. Dan Abnett has created a masterpiece! Outstanding story telling, vivid (but not overwrought) battles, wonderful dialogue start this saga off on absolutely the right foot! MCNeill and Counter have enourmous footsteps to follow in.
As an aside, this book also features the best cover art I have ever seen in a 40K novel! The image of the Luna Wolves in the midst of battle is almost worth the price of admission along!
Book Review: vintage abnett Summary: 5 Stars
Easily as good or possibly better than his Eisenhorn fiction. Plenty of the human touch and doubts that made that trilogy so good, and the action scenes are less stupid, though perhaps not flawless.
The first I've ever read of the GW WH40K stuff involving the earlier background that's actually coherently immersing and internally logical.
Everything makes sense, it all fits together, and only a few issues seem outstanding, but all in all a very good read, much better than the average Warhammer fiction.
