Book Review: My favorite Horus Heresy book so far

Wow. Just, wow. Being exposed to Warhammer 40k only by association and via Dawn of War, I cannot say I am a Warhammer fan's fan. I've enjoyed the HH books so far (though opting not to read Descent of Angels) but the last couple were a little stale. OK, the Space Marines are an unstoppable martial force and all fell to corruption because of their various flaws. WE GET IT. I was actually dreading that this would be 400 pages of the same. But I was so wrong. Those books were enjoyable in their own right, but we needed a change. Legion gives us that, taking the direct opposite approach of the last couple books - which is a good thing (tm).
As I said, I'm not coming at it from the perspective of knowing everything 40k. I've only read the Heresy and Grey Knights books. This book is focused primarily on a unit/force of the Imperial Army. It deals with spies and intrigue and double crosses. The Alpha Legion is in the backdrop - but that is perfect because that's how the Alpha Legion works! They set up the board and let the pieces play.

Contrary to the opinions of others, my favorite part of the book is the end. The Alpha Legion doesn't turn because of some character flaw. They don't chase perfection, and they aren't infected by the warp. They choose it because they know that to ultimately defeat Chaos, they must embrace it. And it is so believable given the tidbits Abnett has given you. Just amazing.

On the author: Abnett doesn't hold your hand and explain "this is what a het is" "this is what a wadi is" - he just throws you in and lets your figure it out. But he provides enough context so you can follow the story and dialog regardless of your familiarity with the actors and their existing relationships. This is what differentiates between a good writer and a great writer. Abnett is definitely the latter.
