Book Reviews of Horus Heresy: Battle for the Abyss

Book Review: A good book in the Horus Heresy series
Summary: 4 Stars

At the begining of the book I was tending to agree with the majority of the reviewers that gave 3 stars for it, but as the story progressed it became more and more interesting, and in the final chapters you cannot stop reading.
Unlike other reviewers, I think it has everything to do with the development of the Heresy. It tells a very important chapter in this civil war, and the writer did a good job in turning an almost impossible mission in a success.
The story goes around the pursuit of a superbattleship (Furious Abyss) constructed by traitor mechanicums to the Word Bearer Legion. The mission of the ship had a major role in the plan to destroy the Ultramarines Legion by the traitors. An ecletic group of space marines stationed in an space station answer a distress call of an Ultramarines cruiser. Taking command of a Imperial fleet stationed at the space station, Captain Cestus of the Ultramarines plus some squads of Space Wolfes and World Eaters (not knowing that their primarch had already betrayed the Emperor) give chase to the superbattleship to try to stop it before it reaches its goals. A cruiser from the Thousand Sons Legion leaded by Captain Mhotep (the only space marine aboard) also joins the Imperial fleet.
The characters are well developed, especially the Space Wolf Captain Brynngar. Cestus is a little bit dull and he is not very charismatic. Ben Counter did not know how to capture the Ultramarines spirit in this book, but he was not also totally unsucessful like other reviewers put. Mhotep is not very credible. I think this character was the low point among the cast. Too contradictory to be true.
I enjoyed the book very much and I recomend it. I think the reviews with 1 or 2 stars are very unfair with the book.

Book Review: True Warhammer 40K Fans read on.......
Summary: 4 Stars

Another great book under the Horus Heresy umbrella. I am getting more than a little sick of people whining about certain books in this series being useless "side-plots". What complete nonsense! THEY are not the ones telling the story, BL are and so far they are doing a very good job. Who are YOU to tell anyone else how to tell their own stories?

I for one am very interested in learning about the background to the main relevant legions and chapters. I thought Descent of Angels was a fantastic read and has made me want to focus on the Dark Angels more in gaming both models and on PC. Battle for The Abyss takes a completely different approach and focuses on battlefleet Gothic style spaceship conflicts which makes it another great twist in the saga. I for one cannot wait for the next book, then the next and HOPE that they all take a different slant or approach the saga from a different viewpoint in each case.

After all, isn't that the enitire point of having multiple authors on a saga? Nay-sayers and impatient types go away and shut up please........

Book Review: What's the rush?
Summary: 4 Stars

First, this book does not get us any closer to the Battle of Terra, but to compare it to "Descent of Angels" is unfair. "Battle for the Abyss" is small in scope and the entirety of its 400 pages merits one sentence in previous cannon. That said, however, it is an enjoyable read and fun because the reader gets to see how different "brother" Chapters work together (or not) and how Astartes get along with their human counterparts (or not). Furthermore, the reader gains even greater (though somewhat repetitive) insight into the workings and beliefs of the WordBearers.

If you are in no rush to hurry to Terra, and would rather enjoy every facet of the grand epic, give this book a chance.

Book Review: Fine Quality Violence.
Summary: 4 Stars

Ben Counter adds another book to the excellent Horus Heresy series with Battle for the Abyss. Though at times the pacing seems to slow down, this book gives a fine example of what more WH40k books should have. Detailed space battles. Too often books of this series focus only on the ground aspect of the future conflicts. I believe it takes a good writer to envision what the future holds for ship to ship conflicts.

An easy 4/5 for this book, which took me about two days to finish.

Book Review: Battle for excitement
Summary: 4 Stars

This book was just ok. Not one of the strongest books in the series.
