Book Reviews of Hopes and Dreams: The Story of Barack ObamaBook Review: Hopeful pictures of a living dream Summary: 5 Stars
The biography reflects the life of president-elect Barack Obama by way of pictures, text passages and quotations. The author Steve Dougherty has a nose for Obama's typical statements. Combining quotations like "Not before you prepare yourself for something bigger than you think you`re capable of, will you recognize your real potential" with fascinating images of a moving life result in an informative illustrated book. Pictures from his youth, his family life, his college life, his political years of apprenticeship, beginnings of the election campaign until presidency give a good impression of the life of the candidate. The photo editorial by Hal Buells moves along at eye level with the text passages and quotations.
It seems as if author and photographers constantly accompanied Barack Obama. This illustrated book is deeply moving. It will fill all those with enthusiasm who sympathize with the president-elect. Hope and dreams belong to the keywords of the new president. This biography illustrates how dreams can come true und how to live with hope so that it inspires people worldwide.
Book Review: A good intro to Barack Obama. Summary: 5 Stars
My first impression of the book was that it would have great photos and little substance.
I was correct about the photos, wrong about the rest.
"Hopes and Dreams" is an overview of Barack Obama's life covering his childhood as a bi-racial child, his search for information about his father and how that affected him. His decision to pass up a Wall Street career and opting to take a lower-paying job training as a grassroots organizer in Chicago. It also covers his journey through politics and eventual decision to run for president.
His mistakes regarding drugs is discussed as well as his middle name.
Here are a few quotes from the book:
"He is a voice of strength and moderation,an American success story."-John McCain page 46.
"We must understand that the might of our military has to be matched by the strength of our diplomacy."-Barack Obama page 107.
This book is what I call a "coffee table book". Loaded with photos and enough information to serve as an introduction to Barack Obama. I recommend "Audacity of Hope" also.
Book Review: The Audacity of Hope Summary: 5 Stars
This is MUST reading for all Americans and will give the reader a thorough understanding of the Barack Obama the media is trying to convince us we know nothing about. He lays himself bare -- his life, his beliefs, his thoughts, his ambitions and his plans for a better America for all of its citizens. I doubt anyone with an open mind will come away from this book unconvinced that he is more than ready to be the President we need in 2008.
Book Review: Wonderful book Summary: 5 Stars
It is more of an outline than a fully fleshed out view of Senator Obama, but very well written. The photos are fantastic, also. I would suggest delving deeper after reading this by purchasing the 'Audacity of Hope', which really shows the depths of this man's knowledge on not only political but social complexities that have shaped his life and helped mold him into one of the most amazing candidates of a generation.
Book Review: Something blowing in the wind Summary: 5 Stars
There is often that little anodine incident that starts a huge wheel that can no longer be stopped. Barack Obama, this young fellow whose roots astride two continents that have a lot in common is definitely a tool in the hands of the times.
