Book Review: Made my baby into a book-lover!

As other reviewers point out, this is an abridged version. Nothing in here about Mr Brown going out of town & coming back with Mr Black; nothing about playing all day and fighting all night. But this is a board book designed for little babies, and it's perfect for them. I will certainly buy the unabridged version as soon as my boy is able to read; two copies of this classic is not too many.
About this edition: The production of this book is dazzling. The colors are bright and beautiful and clean, the lines are jet black and crisp, and the paper is glossy and attractive. Each page could be torn out and framed as modern art. The huge type is a graphic unto itself, and I've noticed my 7-month-old staring at the words and letters, something he never does with smaller type. Another thing I love is that this book uses the classic Century Schoolbook font, with its clear and graceful letterforms. (Overly funky fonts don't help babies learn to recognize letters.)
My son is overjoyed every time we read this. When he spots it across the room, he'll stare at it, then look at me pleadingly. He's now learned the name of the book and smiles at the mere words "Hop on Pop." Dr. Seuss has taught millions to love words and reading (including me)... add my son to that list now!

A condensed, board book version of the classic bestseller, perfect for babies and toddlers. Introduces the youngest readers to the wonderful world of Seussian word play.First published in 1963, Hop on Pop remains a perennial favorite when it comes to teaching kids to read. Here, as in most of his extensive body of work, Dr. Seuss creates uncomplicated, monosyllabic rhymes to foster learning and inspire children to read. But what was radical about this little book at the time of publication (and what makes it still compelling today) is Seuss's departure from the traditionally dull pictures and sentences used in reading primers. In contrast, the illustrations here are wild and wonderful, and the accompanying language, while simple, is delightfully silly. For example, the rhyme "THREE TREE / Three fish in a tree / Fish in a tree? / How can that be?" is brought to life with a trio of plump, self-satisfied fish perched atop globular branches as two stymied hybrid dog-rabbit-humanoids look on in consternation. Hop on Pop does much more than teach children the basics of word construction, it also introduces them to the incomparable pleasure of reading a book. (Ages Baby to Preschooler)
