Book Reviews of Home to Holly Springs (Father Tim, Book 1)

Book Review: Disappointing
Summary: 2 Stars

I loved the first four Mitford series books. However, I have to believe that this book is written by a different author. The writing style is amateur and difficult to follow. I found this book to be extremely aggravating. I was constantly trying to figure out who was speaking in the dialog and who was who. For example, there are TWO Peggys. Couldn't the author have simplified things by creating a different name? Flashbacks are poorly delineated leaving the reader to sort out orientation in time. Finally, the constant attempt at writing dialog in a dialect is tiring and poorly executed. I was so irritated by the book, that I was compelled to write this review; and I never take the time to write a review. I'd be very surprised if this is truly Jan Karon's work. Usually her writing is clear and inviting. This one missed by a long shot.

Book Review: Much too long. Could have been said in half the number of pages
Summary: 2 Stars

Very disappointed in this book. I have been a Karon fan since her first book and think this is the first time I
almost didn't finish the book. The last part was ok but much too much dialogue that was not interesting enough
to hold my interest for very long. I think it is time to go back to Mitford where the people are interesting and
sometimes funny but seem true to life. Guess I will have to end my review by saying 'BORING' for the most
part.

Book Review: Don't Recommend
Summary: 2 Stars

I was very much looking forward to another heart warming and spiritually fulfilling story, but "Home to Holly Springs" doesn't even come close to the prior Mitford series. Like another reader, it is hard to believe that this was Jan Karon who authored the book. It lacks the deepness of the characters and enduring wisdom and humor I always loved in the other books. Take it back to Mitford and continue the legacy that made the series a classic.

Book Review: Not Home at All
Summary: 1 Stars

I work in Holly Springs. I am through there all the time. This is not the same town, of any time period. I enjoyed the Mitchard series so much, I went to Jan Karon's book signing for this book. She was delightful & charming. I almost lived in history as my four year old daughter almost knocked her akimbo. Ms Karon is not in actuality as young as her photos appear. She was wobbling along in very high heels, of which she almost got knocked off of by my excited daughter.

The bad narrating has already been mentioned. This narrator is not of the same calaber as John McDonough. Several Southern words, such as Sewanee College have been mispronounced. I don't feel like this book is even about Father Tim without John McDonough to see it through. When I hear Mr McDonough narrating another book, I always feel like it's Father Tim narrating somebody else's book.

The biggest thing that grates on me & has bothered several friends is the Southern things that are just WRONG in this book. The thing that made us laugh the hardest was the ground hog hunting. We don't have ground hogs. I even called a friend who's a big hunter. There is no such thing. No ground hogs, no ground hog hunting. What was Ms Karon thinking? Where did she get this? I think the old men in Minor Brothers Hardware Store she visted in Holly Springs while doing research thought this would be a better joke on Ms Karon than sending her snipe hunting is all I can think. I am sure some old man put his whittling down to laugh himself to pieces over this.

I really dislike it when Yankee people try to write about the South & get it wrong wrong wrong. It's inevitable they try for a civil rights racial relations thing. It always goes horribly wrong. And this book wallows in it. Yankee people should just not go there. It is distasteful & in poor taste. And when I say distasteful, I mean the words, the spirit of the book & the bad narrating. The narrator tries for different voices & fails horribly. The narrator's try at a "Southern" accent and an African American accent is in very bad taste. Almost to the point of being offensive.

This book has no charm. It has none of the wonderful people from Mitchard. THere are no fun, witty people. No jokes & stories. No unusual people with interesting foibles. I was really looking forward to this book. And I am deeply disappointed in it. I realize any author wants to try new things. I am sure Ms Karon got tired of writing about the same people from the same little town. But even when she moved Father Tim to another town, it worked. This book does not work. It is like a neighbor or some distant cousin wrote this book instead of Ms Karon. I can fine none of her talent in the words.

Book Review: Causes Wrinkles
Summary: 1 Stars

Mitford series made me smile while I read and when I put them down. This book made me frown. I think I have a new wrinkle because of it.
