Book Reviews of Holy Blood, Holy Grail

Book Review: If you love a good conspiracy theory...
Summary: 5 Stars

...then you'll love this book. Buried treasure, Knights Templar, Cathars, Rosicrucians, evil-scheming/goddess-suppresing Catholics, Mary Magdalene as the foundress of the Merovingians, and a Jesus who faked his Crucifixion. And anagrams! Did I mention anagrams?

If conspiracism is the sophistication of the ignorant, these fellows are pretty darned--well, you can imagine. If you're a student of logic, if you're a reporter or attorney or analyst of any sort, the logical leaps made by the authors will leave you dizzy, breathless, and grudgingly impressed by the wilful suspension of disbelief. The footnotes are fascinating; in there you'll learn just how many "sources" cited in the main text turn out to be unavailable, illegible (!), or in fact cited from some squirrelly, unconfirmable source. But the paucity of orginal or confirming materials is, of course, part of the conspiracy. Hey, if THEY can cover up the reign of Dagobert II, THEY can do anything!

I can't stress how much fun this book is. You won't believe a lick of it, but you'll have a good time on the ride. It's a useful companion piece to "The Da Vinci Code," whose author has obviously digested the Baigent-Leigh-Lincoln canon.

Book Review: It's interesting....These doubters.
Summary: 5 Stars

Alot of you are doing exactly what they said the critics have done, You can argue all you want about Prior and etc, But they will agree with me that the most important topic here is the gospels pertaining to Jesus, you must remember that they think the most interesting thing here is that there is a civilization of people who believe in Jesus because of what they have been told to believe by force or condition to believe since childhood(like me, being a preachers kid) But they have now questioned not what you believe but on what grounds do you believe. They didnt make up verses, They quoted what was in the bible the King James Version! Think about this! What is the mystery behind the "Two Mary's" is Mary of bethany and the Magdalen the same? well according to the bible THEY ARE! Is there contradictions concerning the resurrection in the gospels? Well according to the gospels THERE IS! Is there something odd about the way Jesus was tried & convicted by Rome's accord? If you read the gospels with a historic eye THERE IS! People pick up the bible and read it along with what they question and you will come out with the same conclusions.

Book Review: Research can lead to interesting places
Summary: 5 Stars

It is well known that history is written by the winners. This is clearly illustrated in Holy Blood, Holy Grail, which chronicles the attempts of two researchers working in France to find out just what is up with the Holy Grail, the Templars, and the Church. Their journey is complicated and strange -- and a lot more than the reader or the researchers themselves bargained for.

Even if you don't agree with their conclusions, you have to admit that the source material points in the direction of the Holy Grail being exactly what they say it is. It also points to the Priory of Sion and the Templars being intricately connected to the whole story.

I became interested in Holy Blood, Holy Grail after reading The Da Vinci Code, and I must say that Brown closely follows the information in this work. If you wanted to know "what was true" about The Da Vinci Code, this book will clarify it for you.

I would say the most unfortuntate thing about the whole book is that if even just half of it is true, there are a lot of things about religous history as we know it that are either wrong or "written by the winners."

Book Review: The Truth Will Set You Free-And Make You More Curious!
Summary: 5 Stars

I still have my old edition of this book. Baigent wrote bravely at a time when it was not fashionable to mention Jesus' possible marraige to Magdalene. Then along came Laurence Gardner and others who were doing serious detective work to uncover yet more. Dan Brown writes fiction, and I still can't understand how he can be a best seller (no offense Dan) when the truth is even more intriguing. I highly recommend this book as starters in your quest for the truth. Also read Fida Hassian's book "Search for the Historical Jesus."

This doesn't mean the end of Christianity, but its new and wonderful beginnings. The clues were in the Bible the entire time. We just didn't understand what was right before our eyes because we were taught to interpret things differently. If a glass of water is before you, you can describe it as half empty, or half-full. So too with the Bible. There are many ways to interpret what's been right before us the entire time. My hats off to authors like Michael Baegent who can see so much more in a mere cup that's only half full. Good research and a good read. Learn and Enjoy.

Book Review: New Genre
Summary: 5 Stars

This book belongs in a class by itself. It's not exactly a history text, nor is it a novel. The label "faction" doesn't do it justice. But if you enjoyed the Da Vinci Code, you need to read this book, because everything Dan Brown talks about is here, and more.

The story weaves its way through thousands of years of history, involving Freemasons, Templars, Crusaders, the Catholic Church, Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Knights of the Round Table, Columbus, etc. It's a real history lesson, but from an unconventional point of view. And it's not confined to History, because so much of the book involves Geography as well.

How accurate is it? As a scholar myself, I can attest to the fact that much of what they say and report on is true. Many times they advance theories which go beyond the facts, but that is what theories are for. You may agree or disagree with their interpretations, but generally speaking they come from good authority.

If history or geography or religion are areas that interest you, you owe it to yourselfto read this book.
