Book Reviews of Hold TightBook Review: WOW - Don't you just love the book you CANNOT put down?! Summary: 5 Stars
You know, I don't get to read as much as I used too ... I used to love to get a new book at the grocery on shopping day Friday, get home, put groceries away, power cook for the weekend (So all you have to do is warm up over the weekend) - and then...settle in with a little snack bowl, glass of Pepsi and since I am now old (pushing 50) - a VERY bright light ;) ... and lets BEGIN A RELAXING WEEKEND! - but how many times ... you start the book and push yourself thru the first few chapters, in hope, it happens...you get hooked.
Unfortunately, its been a long long time since I picked up a book that could make me ignore the ringing phone, stay in rather than run errands, and stay up till 3 AM to read "just one more chapter".
But this book did it! I totallllllllly loved Hold Tight! A friend recommended Harlan Coben...and by the time I got Hold Tight, it was in paperback form. So I figured...ahhh whats a few bucks - if it isn't any good, it makes for good space in the recycle bin...right? From the middle of chapter one, I was hooked.
There wasn't 2000 different characters...
Harlan introduced the characters enough so - that you really got to know them - (meaning you don't have to flip backwards to try to remember who is who)
and I guess most of all, I idenified with the parents in the book!
The story line was real enough that in the back of your mind, you're thinking, "geez...what WOULD "I" do?"
but "fiction" enough - that you weren't wondering what part was enhanced for content...right? ;)
Harlan laid out the twists & turns in just the right places that made you want to go onto the next chapter (and this doesn't necessarily mean the last paragraph of the chapter is where all the excitement happened either .. which I sometimes hate because I like to stop reading at chapters end) but he laid out the cliff hanging portions to where you're thinking "Ok JUST ONE MORE CHAPTER!"
GOSH I LOVE WHEN THAT HAPPENS - don't you?
I now have another "favorite author" ... and thats so cool in itself.
Don't ya just hate when you have a favorite author - but you have read all their books?
And you have to wait ... sometimes up to a year to get something else from them?
I do ...
so now ... I have someone to look for at the library...or the grocery store ;)
I like a good mystery...but most of all, I like a good story...
I like reading about something, I have a clue on -
I'm just NOT into a story of brain transplants
from humans to lawn mowers...
nor books with events and words - that I have to research to get the full meaning!
If I want to jiggle my brain veins - then I'll grab my Sudoku or New York Times Crossword Puzzle...
I'm not saying....Fun with Dick & Jane is my preferred choice of weekend reading...
I do want to think - and this book did that...
just enough to relax. Not worry that I had missed something...
I liked how the parents worked things out -
I liked how the parents in the book, were real, and disagreed...and agreed, all within the same chapter.
I liked how their problems - were actually problems any parent could face...
the book was "current"
(talked about the "social networks" like myspace - facebook)
The book shared the thoughts of EVERY character - what is the parents thinking? What were the children thinking? How about the friends and other characters brought in because of the situation...and what were the characters thinking about the other characters...
This is just a well written book - at least for me.
I hope Harlans other books follow suit - if they do, I'll be sure to review - if they don't ...
you'll find them in my recycle bin ;)
(actually I donate my books - which in most cases is the BEST way to recycle anything!)
Way to go Mr Coben!
