Book Review: Having Reread This One Yet Again...
Summary: 5 Stars
...it really is a great yarn, detailing the return of Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt to his regiment after the behind enemy lines mission to in "Traitor General." Since Gaunt and his team spent so much time on a chaos world, he is unfortunately not allowed to command instantly, instead being used as a commissar for the Fortis Binars initially. The rest of the mission team rejoins the regiment to initially rocky results.
I won't spoil the rest of the plot, I'll just say that the setting of the war changes drastically from the beginning, and that you should NOT feel cheated by Gaunt's time away from the First-and-only. When he's with the Binars, you'll see all the qualities that makes Gaunt such a great commander, commissar, and guy in general. Who doesn't want that? The battle scenes in this book are awesome, Mkoll is his usual ridiculously amazing self, and we finally meet another Imperial Guard regimental officer--other than Colonel Zoren from book one--who isn't a despicable gloryhound. That's nice to see.
Five stars. Did I mention that the beginning of the book might be my favorite 50 pages in the whole series?

This is the second in the new "Gaunt's Ghosts" sequence, "The Lost". Returning from a long mission on a Chaos world, Commissar Gaunt finds that his old regiment, the Tanith First-and-Only, has been redeployed under a charismatic new commander. As the fighting becomes bitter, Gaunt is finally reunited with his men as the Imperial forces make one last desperate attempt to hold the line against the invaders.War Books
