Book Reviews of Hey Ho Let's Go: The Story of the Ramones

Book Review: gonna get my Ph.D
Summary: 5 Stars

The greatest thing about this book is that complements my love for The Ramones. I have adored this band since even before I met them at a promotion for Pleasant Dreams back before I was even officially a teenager. Joey spoke to me, ok? He asked ME MY name before signing MY copy of Pleasant Dreams. Dee Dee was there, ok? The autographed album is right in of front of me, right now, my most treasured possession, not for sale at any price. And I hate to work, ok? That's why I love this book, Everett True is obviously a kindred spirit. Sure, he deifies The Ramones, as he damn well should. They're gods. He reveres them as the gods they are but still reveals them as human and subsequently cursed with human as well as artistic flaws. There's a great quote in the book from former Sire Records boss, Seymour Stein where he says, "A band like The Ramones don't come along once in a lifetime; they come along once." It's weird, but that quote taps into why this book is so sad. This thing, this era, this epoch known as The Ramones has come and gone. Fortunately, we will all continue to live in a world where it happened, and like all things in the past it will always have happened. To use the cliché, no one can take it away from me, from us even, I mean those experiences of bouncing around to Teenage Lobotomy, preteen to twenty years post-teen. And it's obvious that True sees the importance of that and he really does a good job of expressing it. And he also does a good job of showing us what the experience was like for the band members themselves, as human beings, when they were doing all the work that it took to bring so much pure joy to so many people around the world. If they hadn't toured themselves to death I wouldn't have gotten to see them live. And God bless CJ for being there to help them continue. I hope all the Ramone survivors check on Amazon and see this review so they can know how thankful I am for how much happiness they've given me. When Joey died I dreamed that he came to say goodbye to me on his way to heaven. He said, `I just wanted to say goodbye to my biggest fans.' Even though it was just a dream it seems like the kind of thing he would have really done. I woke up crying and it can still make me cry. That image I had of him in my dream and the actual real man who asked me my name back in '81, what I'm saying is, the Joey in the book and MY Joey are totally aligned and I think True proves himself as an excellent rock'n'roll journalist by capturing his essence so well. This book is really sad, too. Nostalgia is part of it, I suppose, but that's really an oversimplification. All things must pass, but for now, I still feel twelve-years-old when I'm bouncing around with The Ramones on.

Summary of Hey Ho Let's Go: The Story of the Ramones

New softcover edition! Once seen as a punk joke, The Ramones eventually came to be taken seriously, influencing almost every garage rocker that succeeded them. The sad, exhilarating warts-and-all-rock bilgraphy tells the whole story of the band from Queens as a paradigm rock saga - a litany of drugs, fallings-out, financial catastrophes, inter-band rivalries, bad management and death.
