Book Review: the importance of unbiased perspective in raising children
Summary: 5 Stars
i have five kids. i don't know what got into me and my wife but we have five! wow! (actually, we got into a few too many white wine spritzers. but that's another story.)
it is so difficult raising small children now days. when i was young, the worst i had to contend with was a network television program that had too much sex in it. sleazy, oily and dirty sex, erotica of the worst kind. the kind that makes you ashamed to have a grandmother. anyway, it was something that was easily censored if mom and dad were around. they'd turn it off, for instance. if we refused, dad would unlatch his belt, slowly strip it off, look us in the eye with his smoky, brown irises and, with a fire, a kind of loathing and love all mixed together--he would teach us. teach us how to be boys and girls. teach us that pleasure comes only with its opposite.
but that was a different age. nowadays when a dad takes off his belt in front of his children he could be arrested for sexual harassment. why i almost got arrested for suggesting to the county sherriff that my children be incarcerated for failing to take out the trash. i was merely teaching! but the big city lawyer saw it otherwise. we had to skip counties to keep the family together.
which brings me to this book. it harkens back to a simpler age, an age before cable tv, when 'computers' were merely people who did your taxes. when society understood that people have to be angry, have to take risks, have to be bold and non-conformist. but we have forgotten all that now, for what we have lost as a culture is this absurd appreciation of the nethereworld of skin and bone. solitude and distress. wine and tenderness. carrion.
but i digress into abstraction.
the point of this book is not abstraction but love and hardness--it teaches kids how to have a heart of stone, to be broken with one hard blow, as it were, to be the hero of their fathers--to be able to see fathers as heroes nowadays. because we all know what the liberals have done to fatherhood. they have made it spare, weak and immoral.
but i am a father, i have control, i have mercy, love and the belt! and with this book and the grace of Jesus so too will my chldren conform to the blessings of the Almighty in america. i wouldn't have it any other way and neither should you.
