Heidi - the tinist girl with the largest, most selfless and innocent heart. Heidi is one of those characters who seems just too good to be true (the fact that Shirley Temple played her in the movie version shows that everyone agrees on this point) but she is so endearing and fun that you forget how "good" she is and just enjoy her. I imagine that I would find living in the Alps with a quiet old man, an ignorant goatherd, a blind old woman and a passel of goats to be a rather tame existence, but through Heidi's eyes it seems the epitome of the good life. Heidi is a model of childish virtue (like Sara Crewe of A Little Princess and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm) but appealing and inspiring, rather than boring and prosy. She is truly a good soul, and her story is a must-read for every young and old girl alike.
Book Review: This is the best book ever written Summary: 5 Stars
This is the most precious story ever written, and the translation is wonderful. I read it several times a year, even though I'm almost 35 years old.
Although Johanna Spyri wrote many stories for children, none of them can even come close to Heidi.
Book Review: A Very Special Book Summary: 4 Stars
This was my mother's favorite book. She was often not well and was a voracious reader. As an only child, I, too, devoured books as fast as I could find them. My house then, as now, is a tribute to the written word. I was named after the book, so naturally I read it numerous times, dreaming that I was the heidi in the book, running through the alpine meadows...basking in the grouchy love of my grandfather..being one with the surroundings. It's such a sweet book..a book of love and hope and overcoming all odds for the ones you love. How can you not love it! I always fantasized about finding my own Peter to live happily ever after with...running through fields, well, you get the idea.... Alas, the only Peter I ever found was a long-haul trucker with deprived teeth, seven piercings (two in places I cannot attest to) and tattoos from head to toe who played Aerosmith and Waylon Jennings as loud as he could. My God! My prince has come!. Well, NOT!. Ah well. The search continues! By all means read the book to your children..or to yourself. It's worth the effort. It's nice to read books that leave you with a smile on your face.
