Book Reviews of Heidi (Children's Classics)

Book Review: Heidi is a must-read!
Summary: 5 Stars

I give Heidi, by Johanna Spyri, five out of five stars.
I give this book five stars because it is full of details that make the characters come alive. The characters are part of the five stars too, because they are interesting and seem like real people. Some characters in the book are, Heidi, the sweet girl who can melt the heart of anybody, Detie, Heidi's aunt, Uncle Alp, Heidi's rough, but lovable grandfather, Peter a goatherd and Heidi's good friend, Bridget, Peter's mother, Grannie, Peter's grandmother, Clara, a paralytic girl who is cheered up by Heidi, Miss Rottenmeier, a mean housekeeper, Sebastian, a nice servant, Mr. Sesemann, Clara's kind father, Grandmamma, Clara's grandmother who is a loving woman and treats Heidi like her own granddaughter, and Doctor Classen, a caring doctor.
The other reason I give Heidi five stars is because the storyline is wonderful. Heidi starts off the wonderfully classic story by moving in with her grandfather and happily adjusting to life in the Swiss Alps with him. She couldn't stay with her aunt, because her aunt couldn't take her to work with her everyday. She becomes friends with everyone she meets and is happy. Then one day Detie, her aunt, comes and takes her away to Frankfurt, to stay with Clara, a lonesome paralytic girl. Heidi brightens up Clara's life, but then she becomes homesick. The kind doctor, Doctor Classen, notices that Heidi isn't doing well and sends her home to get better. She goes home and waits for Clara and Mr. Sesemann to come visit her at her home in the Alps. Clara becomes ill and the doctor will not let her leave her home in Frankfurt, because he is afraid something might happen to her. The doctor had recently lost a daughter and was very sad, so Mr. Sesemann and Clara convinced him to go visit Heidi in their place. The doctor goes to the Alps and regains his strength. When he returns to Frankfurt he immediately tell Clara and her father to go. Clara comes but her father cannot, so instead Grandmamma came. Clara stayed with Heidi, but Grandmamma didn't. In the end Clara gets so much strength that she can walk! I think this book is wonderful, because it has a great theme, friendship always wins.
I also recommend any other classic stories.

Summary of Heidi (Children's Classics)

The story of Heidi was written over one hundred years ago, however, it is far from a period piece. In the Swiss Alps, where it is set, a hundred years is just the blink of an eye. We see in her the daughter that every mother dreams of having and every little girl dreams of being. Her presence makes us happy, and so her story has endured. This deluxe Children?s Classic edition is produced with high-quality, leatherlike binding with gold stamping, full-color covers, colored endpapers with a book nameplate. Some of the other titles in this series include: Anne of Green Gables, Black Beauty, King Arthur and His Knights, Little Women, and The Secret Garden.
Johanna Spyri's classic story of a young orphan sent to live with her grumpy grandfather in the Swiss Alps is retold in it's entirety in this beautifully bound hardcover edition. Heidi has charmed and intrigued readers since it's original publication in 1880. Much more than a children's story, the narrative is also a lesson on the precarious nature of freedom, a luxury too often taken for granted. Heidi almost loses her liberty as she is ripped away from the tranquility of the mountains to tend to a sick cousin in the city. Happily, all's well that ends well, and the reader is left with only warm, fuzzy thoughts. Spryi's story will never grow wearisome--and this is a very appealing edition. --Naomi Gesinger
