Book Review: Don Felder is still and will always be an Eagle...
Summary: 5 Stars
...no matter what Glenn Frey and Don Henley say! Even though Felder is no longer in the group, his legacy with this legendary band will never be forgotten or overlooked by true Eagles fans! I was upset when I heard Felder was kicked out a few years back. It negated the whole idea of the Hell Freezes Over event back in the mid-nineties. At that time, all five Eagles regrouped to the delight of millions of fans, overjoyed that the members had grown and matured enough to put the hatchet behind them and make the music most important--or so we thought. No such luck--just a few years later, and here we go again, Felder's out of the group. Disgusting! I got the impression after watching the Hell Freezes Over DVD that all was well within the group when they first got back together. As we find out from Felder's book, Henley and Frey had ALREADY resumed their big-shot positions once again even before the first reunion concert! Sure, there are two sides to every story, but Felder's is pretty dang convincing. The fact that Henley and Frey, who were already enormously wealthy not only from their royalties and earnings from the Eagles but also their lucrative solo careers (especially Henley) would gobble up more than their equal share of Eagles Ltd. because "they were more noteworthy" exemplifies nothing but pure greed and ego, not to mention a huge spit on Don Felder. I guess since Timothy Schmit and Joe Walsh were always technically just hired guns anyway, they didn't seem to mind. But who can blame Don Felder for taking an issue with this crap? Anybody in his stead with half a spine or set of principles would have done the same thing. And notice that neither Frey nor Henley have come out with a counter-book of their own to defend their position--not that I know of, anyway.
That said, I do still respect Henley and Frey as legendary artists and songwriters, despite their personality quirks and apparently warped principles. So I will always be an Eagles fan, even if not a hardcore one. I'll tell you this, though, I won't pay $80 to go see the Eagles nowadays without Don Felder there--it just isn't right, for me. Great book, Mr. Felder!
