Book Reviews of Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child

Book Review: Techniques Deliver What it Promises
Summary: 5 Stars

I am writing this review because I've read many other reviews that are full of misinformation.

I am a huge proponent of this book. It basically says follow X steps for your baby's sleep, and get Y results. If not, expect to see Z results. We have followed the X steps, and experienced the Y results, while seeing those who don't get Z results. Very straight forward.

It's pretty simple. 1) Make sleep a priority for your child, on par with feeding them. 2) Use proven methods, however counter-intuitive, to teach your child to sleep on their own. 3) Make sure your children get enough sleep. Do it, and you will be amazed at how easy bed time is for your child, and how happy, alert, and enjoyable they are when they're awake. Do it NOT, and expect to see a fussy baby in the waking hours who has great difficulty putting themselves to sleep.

We are new parents surrounded by other new parents, and we are the only ones using this book's methods. We are experiencing the good promised by this book, while seeing our share of the bad by those who don't practice.

Read it carefully. Stick to it earnestly. And I'm sure your experience will be as positive as ours.

Book Review: The best sleep book by far..and I have read them all!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is excellent. I had a tough time getting my son to sleep when he was an infant. He wouldn't nap, would wake every hour, was very fussy. I was in desperate need of help, so I read every sleep book available for babies, I mean all of them. This one made so much sense and is organized in such a way that you take it a few months at a time. Unlike babywise, this book doesn't employ the "cry it out " mehod from day one. It is not until you child has learned to soothe himself that it recommends crying it out. That is the route I took, but if that is too hard, it had other methods listed that may work for your style better. My son slept through the night after 1 night of crying it out, yes 1 night! also, he went from tasking lots of 20 minute catnaps to a 3 nap schedule then later to a 2hr 2 nap schedule. He is now an excellent sleeper and goes right to sleep for his naps and bed without any protest. In fact, I think he looks forward to his naps and bed. When he wakes up in the morning and from his naps, he babbles to himself and plays with his teddy bear. He is very well rested and truly a happy child. I cannot stress the importance of this book! Healthy sleep habits do = a happy child!!!

Book Review: Methods Still Working 2 Years Plus! My Sleep Bible!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was given as a gift before my son arrived. The sleep methods are clear, scheduled, and best of all...they work! I used this to establish naps and a nighttime routine.

No child is perfect and even my sleep trained son gets off track occasionally. I return to this book to correct any problems that creep into his sleep pattern. Every time the suggested solution works. For example, at 2 he tried to drop his nap. Got it reestablished within 2 days. A few months back, he was requesting water in the middle of the night. Nipped that in the bud in 2 nights. Real life examples are presented with specific solutions.

I see there are several parents that say this book is not for colicky babies or problem sleepers. I cannot speak to that, but for a typical newborn to toddler (and the book goes up to teenagers-just have not needed that yet) it gets results!

Please note, while the methods are not torture like some reviews have suggested, many are not for the faint of heart. Two nights of crying can equal years of peaceful nights!

I recommend trying this out if you feel lost. A well rested parent equals a happier home!!!

Book Review: Best Sleep Book
Summary: 5 Stars

A friend recommended this book whe my son was 3 months old. We had been using Happiest Baby on the Block (also highly recommended) but needing some guidance on how to start a good long-term sleep schedule for our son. The book gave good advice on how to recognize tired signs and avoid over-tired (colic) behavior. We had assumed our son was just colicky but after reading this book we discovered that he was actually over-tired. Once we started with shorter periods or wakefulness during the day and an early bedtime our son was so happy and barely cried at all when he was awake. Our has been sleeping for 11-12 hours/night since age 3 months. He was waking up to nurse twice initially, and then once - and he always went right back to sleep after nursing. At around six months he stopped waking up at all to nurse. Now he is nine monhts old and takes 2 naps during the day and sleeps 12 hours at night. He falls asleep on his own and wakes up happy and smiling. I know several exhausted mothers who have babies my son's age or older who have to nurse their babies to sleep and feed there babies all through the night. Get this book and you will all be well rested, happy, healthy, and atttached.

Book Review: Effective Baby Sleep Book - Must Read!
Summary: 5 Stars

I read this book upon the recommendation of several moms I knew when at 5 months, my son decided to stop napping completely. He went from the newborn/infant that sleeps on/off throughout the day to no napping at all. I was beside myself trying to figure out how to get him to nap because he wasn't doing it on his own. Enter "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child". Thank goodness is all I can say! This book was a lifesaver for us. Dr. Weissbluth goes through WHY babies need sleep in a very common sense way, and shows parents HOW to get your children on a healthy sleep schedule, for both naps and nighttime sleeping. After reading this, we have become very big proponents of a solid nap and bedtime routine because when our son is happy, we are happy. I will say that some of the language and explanations were a bit clinical and over my head, but I got the gist of what Dr. Weissbluth was trying to communicate and he repeats important steps and ideas often. I recommend this book all the time to other moms who are having sleep problems with their babies and I think it works wonders. Highly recommend! Our son is now 18 months old and a solid napper and night sleeper thanks to this book.
