Book Review: A life saver!

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child has been a lifesaver for me. I am a new mother, completely inexperienced in any sort of child care, and was dying from the lack of sleep that a new baby brings. Dr. Weissbluth's theories and practices all worked. His basic theory is that children need to be trained to sleep - they don't just come out of the womb knowing to sleep at night and how to nap during the day.
One of the best things about this book is that he gives different tactics to use. He realized that "one size fits all" sleep training doesn't work for every family and for every child. I personally couldn't do the full detachment method (similar to crying it out), so having other options worked for me. You can try a few different things to see what works for you.
Dr. Weissbluth also realized that some parents perfer the "family bed" - having the child sleep in the same bed or room as the parents. While co-sleeping isn't recommended, Dr. Weissbluth doesn't preach that it is wrong, he simply gives solutions to make it work. While I personally did not do any sort of co-sleeping, I have a friend who believed in doing it for cultural reasons. I was happy to find a book to recommend to her that wouldn't insult her beliefs.
Dr. Weissbluth has an excellent writing style - he does not write based on his opinion, he writes based on fact. He does not put down certain ways of parenting, he simply and scientifically states what works.
Some of the major (and important) things that this book will teach you:
How to train your baby to fall asleep on her own. From 10 months, my daughter has slept 12 hours per night and taken 2-3 3-hour naps per day. I don't rock her to sleep, let her sleep in her swing, etc. I simply put her in her crib and she falls right to sleep.
The importance of a regular schedule.
The importance of always putting baby to bed in the same place (don't just let her sleep anywhere).
The importance of a pre-bedtime routine - i.e. bathtime, story, song, then to bed.
That babies need to sleep after 1-2 hours of wakefullness. I thought my daughter was getting hungry or fussy after being awake for 1-2 hours. I didn't always realize it was just that she was tired. I am now better able to read her cues.
Tips for sleep issues later in life - napping, night terrors, etc, for older chidren.
No one knows how valuable sleep is more than a new mom. Try this book - it will save your sanity.
I now give this book at every baby shower I go to and I get so many thanks.
I thought originally that I had an extemely fussy/colicky baby, which is why I bought this set with "Your Fussy Baby". However, after getting the sleep thing figured out, she wasn't extemely fussy/colicky anymore, so I have no review for the second book. It is a nice reference to have on hand for the next one, though.
