Book Reviews of Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection

Book Review: Get checked out by a doc - and read this book
Summary: 5 Stars

I suffered from excruciating back pain for three months last year. My doctor ordered a large number of tests, including MRI, x-ray, and blood and neurological workups, but no organic cause for my pain was found. I went to physical therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, and obtained some relief, but it was always temporary. I was taking increasing doses of narcotic painkillers and desperate to find some cause (and presumably then a cure) for the pain.

A friend recommended this book, and since I read it, I have gradually recognized the psychogenic nature of my back pain, and begun to deal with it. The pain is not in your head - it's in your muscles. But your head is directly involved, and this book shows you how to begin recognizing it. While it is unrealistic to expect an instant cure as some readers experience, since reading the book I have experienced a remarkable reduction of pain and have been able to resume healthy exercise and stop taking pain killers most of the time. The greatest gift of this book was that it forced me to become more precise about and aware of my emotions at a time when I was under quite a bit of stress. My back is my barometer of unresolved stress.

No one should "self-diagnose" serious back pain. Do get checked out by a traditional physician to rule out serious problems like tumors or cancer. But if you're under quite a bit of stress (and who isn't) and you suffer from back pain, fibromyalgia, allergies, or other kinds of stress-related illnesses, give this book a try. At [the cost], it's a tenth of the price of an office visit (and only as much as a co-payment at my HMO). You may launch yourself on a voyage of discovery that makes you happier and releases you from pain. If it doesn't work for you, I send you my best wishes anyway for freedom from pain.

Book Review: I Wouldn't Have Believed It ...
Summary: 5 Stars

*I felt my back relaxing as I read this book.* I'm not a major sufferer of back pain, but when I wrenched my back a bit (or so I thought) digging postholes for a garden fence, I sought out the book. Sarno believes that back pain (and some other conditions, notably fibromyalgia) are not so much responses to physical accident or illness in most cases, but more likely the body's response to repressed emotional trauma. Not only that, the standard medical community's ability to deal with back pain is generally wildly unsuccessful and based on erroneous data. To wit:

* Almost everybody has a "herniated disk" by age 20, and there is no correlation whatsoever between herniated disk and back pain.

*The back is extremely strong in anybody who can walk and has to be working all the time just to make us able to stand upright.

* You may well be able to reduce or eliminate the pain you're having just by understanding the emotional conflict you're suppressing.

* The incidence of ulcer in the U.S. has declined in the past 20 years, as ulcer has come to be understood to be a hideout for stuffed emotions, making it less effective for this purpose.

In my case, I was helping my Lovely Wife build a fence on Memorial Day weekend (2002) and feeling under pressure (we need the fence before we can plant the garden) and incompetent (I'm a software guy and know very little about fence construction) but in a double bind of wanting to help L.W. finish her project. So I stuck with it and found my back hurting the next day and into the next week. After reading this book, I found my back relaxing immediately and I just relaxed in general upon learning that it's actually rather difficult to really injure one's back ... I fervently recommend this one for anyone with back pain or fibromyalgia.

Book Review: Surprisingly Accurate.
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had a seering pain in the hip joint of my right buttuck for over five years now. Two years ago a doctor finally x-rayed my hip and did a test for rheumatoid arthritis. Neither test showed anything, but my doctor said I most probably was in the beginning stages of rheumatoid arthritis. Over the last two years the pain in right hip grew to encompass the entire hip and my left hip started to hurt also. I've had recurring siatica in my right leg for about 10 years. So, when I heard about this book I was in more and more pain every day. I was unable to stand on my feet for extended periods, to bend over, or to climb short ladders without being in pain for days afterwards. I quit the gym a year and a half ago and have gained a lot of weight because a little bit of exercise would cause a lot of pain. 45 minutes on a cardio machine would leave me unable to walk for five days.

After reading this book the first night and realizing that my pain might be due to TMS and thinking back on what I was angry about I awoke without pain for the first night in months. I have had less and less pain each day and was able to spend an entire day on my feet by the time I was 2/3 through the book. I've finished the book and the only pain I have left is the initial pain in the hip of my right buttock. It's most probably a pinched nerve that has caused all the other pain, but the suggestion from my doctor that it was probably much more was what caused the pain to become incapacitating. Now, that my mind no longer accepts the doctor's probable cause the pain is gone.

If you have pain, get the book. It certainly won't hurt you, and you just may be pain free for the first time in years.

Book Review: I got my life back through this book
Summary: 5 Stars

Just to put simply, Dr.Sarno's method works, if you work on it.

I had serious backpain, stomach upset(close to ulcer), neck pain, frequent headache, eye irritation, and frequent pain legs. I had all this problem for almost 7-10 years. I was in my twenties, when I had all these problems.

I went to various doctors and all of them mensioned that I have serious mussle problem, my stomach is not in the right size, etc.

Three Years back, friend of mine offered this book for free. Being an engineering background, I was seriously investigating this book. Initially, I did not believe anything in this book. As Dr.Sarno clearly put it

"One of the unfortunate realities about working with a disorder like TMS is that most people will reject the idea until they are desperate for a solution"

After 10 years of no relief, I guess, I was desparately looking for a solution. Believe it ot not, all above mentioned pains vanished within a month. I was deligently following everything Dr.Sarno mentioned in this book. First two weeks, the pain got worser and worser. 3-rd week I got a real relief with my stomach upset. From 4-th week onwards, all my Back & neck pain completely vanished. It's almost 3 years since, I had any pain.

I remember those times, when I feel unbearable pain and crying internally for help. Don't treat this book as a ordinary one. If you are undergoing unbearble pain, this book might change your destiny. Give it a shot. Buy or borrow from library or friends. It is worth reading.....

I have never met Dr.Sarno, but every day I say thanks GOD for reading Dr.Sarno's book that changed my destiny for ever.

Book Review: Dr. Sarno is a Genius!
Summary: 5 Stars

If your back hurts, buy this book... now.

I have suffered from chronic back pain for the last 13 years, after having pain from powerlifting and being diagnosed with a ruptured L5-S1 disk. I also have a spina bifida occulta in my sacrum.

In those 13 years I have tried chiropractic therapy, stretching, exercises, heat, ice, nutritional supplements, Tylenol, Ibuprofen, special chairs and shoes, facet joint injections, physical therapy, anti-depressants, surgery (laminectomy in 1991), scar-removal procedure (2 yrs ago), and even daily high dose narcotic painkiller for over a year. The pain ALWAYS came back. It even started spreading to my hips and right shoulder over the past 2 yrs.

I found this book about a month ago when I woke up in pain yet again, even though I had been stretching and exercising every day. There was no logical reason for the pain, and that's when I decided to figure out what was really going on.

I found this book by Dr. Sarno and over the past month, the pain has gone away completely. I have never felt better.

Once you understand how the brain and nervous system function, you can begin to take control of the situation.

For those suffering back (or any other) pain, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I would recommend reading this book before going on to Sarno's "Mind-Body Prescription". I don't think I would have understood the info. in "MBP" as readily if I haven't read "Healing Back Pain" first. Read them both though.

Once you are pain-free, you will again see the world as your oyster.
