Book Reviews of Hawaii: A NovelBook Review: How to read Michener Summary: 5 Stars
I've read almost all of Michener's books. Hawaii was the first, and I read it years ago. However, I discovered how to read the book without boredom that can set in when you're struggling through the pre-historic background. After several false starts, I finally started reading starting with the 2nd (and sometimes the 3rd) chapter. After the book was concluded, then I went back and read the first one or two chapters. With Michener, this technique has never failed me.
Book Review: Best Historical Fiction I've ever read, period. Summary: 5 Stars
I read this for the first time about five years ago, and it has lost none of its appeal. I reread it recently, and it is one of the few books I would buy again if, gasp!, I lost it. I would agree with another review that the names later in the book become confusing because of the intermarriages, but that is not the authors fault, that really is what happened. This is the best historical fiction I've ever read, period. Don't be daunted by the size - its worth it!
Book Review: Hawaii is an incredible book Summary: 5 Stars
I received Hawaii as a gift coinciding with my trip to the Big Island, and it enhanced my trip greatly. It has been nearly three years since I read Hawaii, and images of missionaries getting sea sick and pregnant on boats, Hawaiian royalty in huts, women giving birth under palm trees, Tahitians searching for a new star and Chinese laborers farming pineapples still float around in my head. This book changed the way I look at and experience history.
Book Review: One of Mitchener`s finest!! Summary: 5 Stars
Although, as with other Mitchener novels, "Hawaii" had some sections that could have been shortened, or even eliminated, I still enjoyed most of the historical adventure of this wonderful area. The fact that I had been to the Hawaiian Islands twice made it even more interesting!
Book Review: Another learning experience Summary: 5 Stars
By using imaginary characters and characters from histories, Michener provides a great read and teaches a person a lot in a very short time; people, traditions, political situations, land formations, etc. are all parts of Michener's books.
