Book Reviews of Hattie Big SkyBook Review: A feel-good story that didn't deliver. Summary: 3 Stars
I checked this book out from the library when it was featured by the staff. The body itself was excellent. Mrs. Larson is an excellent author -- her story came alive with the way she depicts her characters, with the hardships Hattie faces, and with the description of the Montana landscape. I found myself drawn into the story, wondering what would happen now, and completely surprised by whatever twist the story took next.
Unfortunately, that included the ending. I don't want to give it away for anyone planning on reading the book, but suffice it to say, it wasn't what I was expecting or even a satisfying alternative. There was nothing "satisfying" about the ending to this book -- not for any of the characters, and not for the reader. I was especially upset when I read the Afterword and learned that the story was inspired by the author's great-grandmother, and that the real-life Hattie got her happy ending.
Maybe that's why I had a problem with it -- the book seemed like a feel-good read about a young woman overcoming obstacles to discover and define who she really is. Instead, it's a book about a young woman dealing as best she can with the blows life deals her, including a few doozies at the end. I expected to put the book down with a warm, fuzzy feeling in my heart; instead, I left it depressed.
