Thank goodness for "tag-up" offsides, because Matt Napier just tagged-up back into the writing zone and bagged himself a literary hat trick: reading, writing and the oft-misspelled 'rithmatic.
The book's least common demonator (LCD) is "counting". The author abandons the relative safety of the alphabet "shooting-out" into the infinite space of astro-numerology. Luckily, Napier's preternatural understanding of numbers and hockey makes Bob Goodenow blush weepingly. Napier combines first-line rhyme-sniping with fourth-line fact-checking to provide a read that's indivisible by the people, of the people and for the people, who like hockey.
Shakespeare once wrote: "That which we call a Rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Obviously he'd never seen Melanie Rose's life-and-hockey-like illustrations for "Hat Trick Counts". Also, scholars suggest that Sir Francis "Canadian" Bacon probably wrote it anyway.
Napier's sophomore effort equates to more than the sum of its parts. While Snell's Law provides the quantitative means of answering the question, "By how much does the light ray refract?", "Hat Trick Counts" provides the qualitative means of answering the question, "Where can I get a great hockey numbers book?"
