Book Reviews of the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)Customer Review: A worthy, astonishing end to the series Summary: 5 StarsThis book isn't perfect. It's a young adult's book at the very least, not a children's book. There's a lot of death and hints at some adult themes. The pacing is extremely uneven: nothing happens in the first half (as the reader's frustration begins to mirror Harry's), and then the second half is non-stop fingernail-biting. There are a lot of threads that are left hanging loose.
But it's still an extremely satisfying end to the best children's series ever - for me comparable to The Once and Future King, to which bereft Harry Potter fans should turn for comfort. The action in this book is absolutely amazing, relentlessly exciting, and completely unpredicted. If, like me, you were haunting message boards trying to figure out what was going to happen, don't worry. You didn't read anything that approaches the actual events. In fact, you may not even remember encountering a lot of the characters who play important parts in this book. We do, however, get very satisfying insights into many long-time characters' back stories. The resolution of the enigma of Snape is a little pat, but makes sense.
Previous books played on themes of trust and vulnerability. Was Dumbledore a fool for trusting Snape? Was Harry's failure to master Occlumency a sign of weakness, and how much danger did it expose him to? What could protect Harry, now that he was of age and Dumbledore was no longer around? Dumbledore is the focus of these questions about trust in The Deathly Hallows. J.K. Rowling develops these themes to their logical conclusions, with the consistency that has been one of her hallmarks.
This series is over, but I'm hoping for prequels!
