Book Reviews of Harris and MeBook Review: A Review of Harris and Me by Joel Flexter Summary: 5 Stars
This story is about an 11 year old boy whose parents are raging alcoholics. He is constantly being sent to relatives in the summer because his parents are too drunk to take care of him. It takes place a few years after World War II on a farm in the middle of nowhere. The book starts out with the unnamed narrator being sent to his somewhat distant relative's house, the Larsons. He has met them once before. There is Harris, his second cousin who is always getting in trouble, Glennis, Harris's sister who is always hitting him for cussing, Knute, the narrator's second uncle and Clair, his second aunt by marriage. The narrator and Harris quickly become best friends. They get into a lot of crazy situations, like when Harris accidentally shoots Buzzer, their pet lynx cat, with a bow and arrow and it attacks them. Or like when they both decide to make a motorcycle out of an old bicycle and a washing machine motor, mainly because the narrator wants to drive down to a girl's house that he met at a dance. The experiment ended in a high-speed wreck, resulting in Harris looking for his single pair of bibs that he always wears and a lot of pain. One time Harris robbed the narrator's only chance of hooking up with a girl. The narrator decided he would get him back for it. He thought of a plan. He was going to convince Harris to pee on an electrical wire. The narrator had some "dirty pictures" in his possession, which Harris greatly wanted. He told Harris he could have two of them if he would pee on the wire. He was hesitant at first, but then decided that it was worth it. After he peed on the wire, lets just say that it wasn't pleasant for Harris one bit. When it came time for the narrator to pay up, a hired hand at the farm took the pictures from him and from there on, Harris still thinks the narrator owes him the pictures. At the end of a rather eventful summer the narrator had to leave Harris and the Larsons to go back home to his dysfunctional family and to be sent off to another relative's house next summer, quite possibly the Larsons again. All in all, I thought it was a great book full of funny situations and hilarious jokes.

Summary of Harris and MeA young city boy is sent to spend the summer on his aunt and uncle's farm. Though he has lived many places over the years, he has never experienced anything like farm life . . . and he has never met anyone like Harris, his daredevil of a cousin. If the two of them can survive wrestling three-hundred-pound pigs and mouse-hunting with toothless old Louie's fire-spitting pet lynx--which, unlike his master, has plenty of teeth--they just might make it through the summer!
