Book Reviews of Harpo Speaks!Book Review: An excellent read about one of the lesser known Marxes Summary: 5 Stars
Harpo's life story is fascinating and entertaining, and this book also gives those of us not around in the early 20th century a look at Vaudeville and other hallmarks of that era. The Marx Brothers' films are entertaining, but equipped with a knowledge of their history contained in this book, films like Horsefeathers and Animal Crackers take on a whole new dimension. Harpo dropped out of school in the second grade, but through a life of adventure, and through his associations with Alexander Woollcott, Dorothy Parker and other literary figures, Harpo became highly educated. He was a quietly blazing star.
Book Review: One Of The Best Summary: 5 Stars
I first read this book over 20 years ago, and have re-read it 3 or 4 times. If I tried to explain all the reasons I love this book, it would take up too much space. "Harpo Speaks" is interesting from the first page to the last. Its funny, and Harpo's deep down decency and goodness comes through the whole book. I felt sorry for him sometimes, but he never felt sorry for himself. He saw the humor in almost everything. He never lost his child-like sense of wonder or mischief. I dare anyone to read this book and come away without deep admiration for the "silent" Marx brother.
Book Review: A Must Read - even for the casual marx brothers fan Summary: 5 Stars
Read the first five pages and you'll be hooked! I guarantee it. Harpo's autobiography is the funniest, most enjoyable book I've ever read and re-read (5th time now). It's not only an in-depth and personal account of the Marx brothers' careers and personal lives, but a fascinating record of turn-of-the-century vaudville, and the artistic and literary world of the 1920's and 30's. His stories about the Algonquin Round Table are priceless! Harpo Marx inspired laughter through his film and TV work, but it is through this excellent book that you truly get a sense of how extraordinary this man was.
Book Review: ..... And one duck egg! Summary: 5 Stars
This book should be standard issue to every human being who wants to know what a well-lived life consists of! What an extraordinary person graces us with the story of his life and a look at the lives of his famous family members! Told with such engaging warmth, Harpo's story continually challanges us to wake up and realize that, like the author, it isn't so much whether you're sleeping in a palace or a harp case...eating caviar or turnip soup...that determines what your life is worth and how fulfilled you are. Nearly indescribable in its charm, this is a books to be read again and again.
Book Review: i don't like to rate, but in this case........ Summary: 5 Stars
i am too lazy, or too busy, or too impatient to sit down and rate books/movies, etc, etc. however, i had to take time out of my day to tell you all that this is one of the funniest books ever written. period. 'harpo speaks' is a page-turner that never gets boring, and will literally have you laughing outloud. page after page, i would say to myself, 'this is to funny/bizzare to be true', yet with each passing page you could see the pieces of harpo's life fitting together to make him the master comedien that he was. this book is an absolute joy. buy it. you won't be disappointed.
