Book Review: Predictable and unpleasant

I've read a few other Nevada Barr books and liked them well enough (although Ann Pigeon is far from my favorite mystery series protagonist), but this one I really didn't care for. I picked out the likely villain very early and I was waiting for an unexpected twist but it didn't come. Really there were virtuallly no surprises and those which there were didn't really matter much. I also got annoyed and very tired of her (the author, through mouth of the protagonist) harping on the one character's fatness, going on and on about it and describing him with really contemptuous language -- it gives a strong impression of someone who is rabidly "sizist." OK, the guy is fat - so are a lot of people, so get over it. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

But instead of memories, the fields where Lorna grew up yield something utterly chilling.Years ago, Lorna's nine-year-old best friend Melinda Eagan mysteriously disappeared, followed shortly after by her older brother. Now it turns out that Jason's bones have been moldering on the Temples' land for two decades. When Lorna's enquiries to the local police are only met with hostility, she enlists the help of ex-private eye T.J. Dawson to dig up the dirt of the past and see what lies beneath. But the mystery-and the grave-turns out to be much bigger than the Eagan case, and the killer is still at large.

The mysteries keep piling on, as one gruesome discovery leads to another, and Heath begins to realize that even though she's lost the use of her legs, the same tenacity that made her one of the world's leading mountaineers has even more rewarding summits to achieve.
