Book Review: Inside the clones

'Hard Contact' by Karen Taviss is set just after the Battle of Geonosis, which marked the beginning of the CLone Wars. Omega squad is developed from a couple of survivors from the Battle of Geonosis who no langer ahve squad mates. The squad quickly gets assemlbed and then shipped out on a new mission. They must infiltrate a secret lab, and capture the lead scientist.
Omega squad must quickly form a team bond and trust. To complicate matters, a Padawan and Jedi were on the planet, but contact ahs been lost.
Can the squad work together, are the Jedis still alive, will this mission succeed?
'Hard Contact' is well written. It provides the information on the clone troopers and the elite squads that the movies never touch upon. The team dynamics and reading about their intial training is interesting. I enjoyed the realization on the padawans part regarding this strange new entity...clones soldiers.
At times the book was slow moving and a bit dry. If you are a Star Wars fanatic this book is a great read. If you are more of a casual fan or someone new to the Star Wars universe (does anyone fit that bill?) this book may not be as enjoyable.

As the Clone Wars rage, victory or defeat lies in the hands of elite squads that take on the toughest assignments in the galaxy-stone-cold soldiers who go where no one else would, to do what no one else could. . . .On a mission to sabotage a chemical weapon research facility on a Separatist-held planet, four clone troopers operate under the very noses of their enemies. The commandos are outnumbered and outgunned, deep behind enemy lines with no backup-and working with strangers instead of trusted teammates. Matters don't improve when Darman, the squad's demolitions expert, gets separated from the others during planetfall. Even Darman's apparent good luck in meeting an inexperienced Padawan vanishes once Etain admits to her woeful inexperience.
For the separated clone commandos and stranded Jedi, a long, dangerous journey lies ahead, through hostile territory brimming with Trandoshan slavers, Separatists, and suspicious natives. A single misstep could mean discovery . . . and death. It's a virtual suicide mission for anyone-anyone except Republic Commandos.
