Book Reviews of Happy Hour Is for Amateurs: A Lost Decade in the World's Worst ProfessionBook Review: Mostly about massive drug and alchohol consumption Summary: 4 StarsHappy Hour is for Amateurs follows the author through three years of lawschool and then seven years of being a lawyer. Yeah, he's a lawyer, but you don't really hear about that. Instead, you hear about the social life which consists of massive drug and alchohol consumption at all times.
Reading this book was a bit surreal. The narrator has one night stands with women who are attractive or not, but always random. He takes all kinds of drugs and drinks the alchohol like a fish. How does he survive in society and not have all sorts of warts on his genitals? Is this what my classmates were doing all through lawschool? I had the same kind of incredulous doubt that I did after the fifth person offered me prescription drugs in the hotel I and my fellow prospective lawyers occupied during the two day bar exam. Were my classmates taking ADD drugs all along to make it through classes? I'll never know.
The legal world does intrude. This is either via analogies between how law works and drug/sex consupmtion. For example, the technical virgin with a very strict definition of sex is a demonstration of how law works; it is possible to completely go against a rule without breaking it as long as you pick the languagea apart and get all technical. The author discusses days at work, but seems to focus more on days on which he went to work in an altered state, or the fun he had sending and receiving porn via email while at the office.
This wasn't a bad read. It's very much about getting high, drunk, and laid, almost to the point of that being a be all end all, which is not totally clear from the marketing.
Summary of Happy Hour Is for Amateurs: A Lost Decade in the World's Worst Profession For some people, happy hour is never enough This is a book about escape. It's also about laughing gas. And bourbon and dope and sex and mushrooms and every other vice millions of us indulge in to forget our jobs, the office, and the stifling, corporate caricatures we're forced to become for paychecks. This is a book about a decade lost in a senseless career no one likes and all the ridiculous things I did to run from it. In the end, it's probably your story as much as mine. We're everywhere. We just can't say it out loud.
