Book Reviews of Happy Birthday to You!

Book Review: A reminder that birthday's are special
Summary: 5 Stars

When do birthday's become just ordinary days? Is it after the age of 30? Or maybe even before that? And why do we tend to cringe when we think about our birthday?

Dr. Seuss, in his classic book "Happy Birthday to You" reminds us that birthdays are meant to be celebrated!  At least they are in Katroo...where the Birthday Bird gives the "hi-sign-and shake just for you". So begins the birthday adventure which includes eating whatever you like (even fettucine alfredo or a chocolate-marshmallow milkshake if you so desire, or in the case of the book, hotdogs with plenty of mustard) It's also a day of entertainment, like being pulled through the air by "funicular goats" (you have to see 'em to believe 'em) and gifts (of course cost is no object) topped off with a  FABULOUS party at the Birthday Pal-alace complete with a serenade by Dr. Derring's Singing Herrings (singing, spelling herrings that is!)

And that's just a little taste of this Seuss tale... one that was read to me growing up, on my own birthday. On the big day, Mom would wake me (and each of my siblings on their respective birthday's) with a reading of "Happy Birthday to You" and a piece of birthday cake for breakfast. Cake for breakfast you say? Of course! It certainly started the birthday-day out right. It's a tradition that I continue with my son. Because birthday's are special and deserve to be treated as such. Whether you're 3, 43 or 103, how often do you have a day that celebrates YOU?

Start a tradition in your family and read "Happy Birthday to You" on the morning of a birthday (and what the heck, maybe throw in a slice of cake and some ice cream too...they'll love you for it!)

Seuss ends the book with the Birthday Bird flying the happy, but tired birthday child home on a very soft platter and putting him to bed. The last lines are my favorite: "So that's what the Birthday Bird does in Katroo. And I wish I could do all these great things for you!"

Read this classic, imagine yourself in Katroo, and have yourself a Happy Birthday!

Book Review: "Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you."
Summary: 5 Stars

I began my first year of teaching with the wonderful words of Dr. Seuss; it was so exciting that the students began to write their own rhymes and we mailed them to Dr. Seuss to read. Obviously, he was busy, but his wife sent us a letter of thanks, telling us that he was in the living room clipping sneech whiskers, and that she was extending thanks to us.

Reading became an exciting adventure then, and still is now. Take for example, this book, "Happy Birthday to You! Dr. Seuss thinks of a character with an odd name, living in a town with an equally odd name. Because you, the charcter implied in this book, are celebrating your birthday, Dr. Seuss has this character give you permission to have "a wonderful birthday, doing whatever makes you happy, whatever makes you, you!" Now, why can't we all adopt a childlike attitude and enjoy our special day!

Without elaborating the numerous birthday adventures, I encourage you to "take to heart the message of celebrating you!" You can be sensible or silly. You can be the best you! Wait for the surprises of the day, and if possible plan some of your own. You can't leave it all up to others, you will need to make plans that lift your spirit and feed your mind with adventures, imagination, and dreams.

Most of all, "Have a Wonderful, Joy-Filled Birthday," one that others will
want to plan for themselves, with your help, of course.

Book Review: Wild, Colorful Story About a Big Party Delivers Fun
Summary: 5 Stars

"Happy Birthday to You!" delivers.

Whisper Dr. Seuss' name and immediately, most of us imagine strange creatures that look pleasantly odd. We think of fun alliterative prose and poetry, somehow wonderfully mixed. It is nonsense, yet it all makes sense. Readers leave with a smile.

Such is "Happy Birthday to You!" Published first in 1959, it remains on the library shelves because of its quality in every regard.

Colors are largely variations of blue and yellow, bringing flavor into masterfully drawn pictures. Pictures range from heavily detailed to sparse, but always are pure Dr. Seuss.

His text is poetry, with plenty for the student of literature to sort out. His brilliance though is in how simple he makes his complex use of meter sound. A child will only know it sounds beautiful and deliciously fun.

"Today you are you, that is truer than true There is no one alive who is youer than you." Know that quote? It is here, in this funky, crazy, fantastic book that isn't about much more than a birthday party.

I fully recommend "Happy Birthday to You!" by Dr. Seuss.

Book Review: A vibrant, lavish celebration of birthday and the uniqueness of each of us
Summary: 5 Stars

My children---ages three and five---request this book over and over all through the year and quote it on numerous occasions. It's one that I truly don't mind reading over and over as well. The incredibly colorful illustrations are fantastical and yet the small, wondering boy who experiences all these grand events somehow keeps them almost believable. My favorite part is when the birthday boy stands atop a mountain and shouts, "I am me! I am I! I may not know why but I know that I like it." It teaches children to celebrate their special individual quality without being selfish about it. The book is simply overflowing with a sense of love and nurturing without being maudlin in the least.

Book Review: Forget Birthday Cards
Summary: 5 Stars

After one reads and delights in Dr. Seuss' book, Happy Birthday to You!, one will see the giving of birthday cards in a much colder and more sterile light. This book should be given to anyone celebrating a birthday who could use a snack from a Hippo-Heimers back (and, quite frankly, who could not). It is a book for all ages through the ages, entirely timeless in its zany approach to that special day. It will have you shouting "I am I" which is the purpose of birthdays and even better is having someone with whom to share one's birthday to shout "We are we". A delightful book which should replace birthday cards and be attached to any gift or even be the gift itself.
