Book Reviews of Haircutting For Dummies

Book Review: Lots of Necessary Information for Beginners
Summary: 4 Stars

This book is not bad at all for a haircut dummy like myself. For a start, my motivation is not to be a hair cutting expert but just to cut or trim my kids' hair to save some money for our household. Although it is not the ultimate beginners' book, it still has lots of necessary information for the novices. It discussed all different kind of tools for the trade, what is recommended and what to stay away from. The different types of hairs and how to deal with them. It gives suggestion for a number of good places to study and a number useful internet links to visit on the web.

I like the style of the Dummies books. The typical insertion of some comic funnies is kinda refreshing to keep you interested when you get into parts that are kinda boring. They emphasize some of the things that you need to remember or point out things that you need to be cautious about with symbols or icons.

There are many pictures in the book but some instructions that probably more importantly need to be shown visually are not available. I would like to be shown more about how to position your hands and fingers at different angles. I did enjoy reading this book; but in the end, it still not feel as satisfying that I have read the best instructional book.

Book Review: Good for the home stylist
Summary: 4 Stars

This is not a professional stylist's manual, it's for HOME use. I think that she does spend a wee bit too much time trying to convince the reader to go off to cosmetology school, but then again, that is her field, and her interest. If you want a professional manual giving tips on how to do the hottest, newest styles, go to cosmetology school. If you want the basics of hair cutting, to trim your family's, or your own hair, this book is an ideal tool. As a mother who has been cutting the hair of a husband and 4 sons, I have found corrections to problems that I have been having as an amateur stylist. The first time that I skimmed this book I saw a few tips well worth the price of the book to polish the cuts that I have been giving, and to prevent errors in the future. At about the cost of one decent haircut, this book is a frugal investment.

Book Review: Great on the basics
Summary: 4 Stars

This book can teach you the basic underlying structure of hairstyles. I've been cutting hair for years without this knowledge, and having it makes my life easier, and my haircuts even better. It's great for shorter haircuts.

It had a section on cutting small children and strangers' hair, which didn't apply to me, but might be of interest to some.

It doesn't have explicit techniques for creating multiple layers for long hair, just some face-framing tips.

Book Review: Great book
Summary: 4 Stars

Great step by step book. The pictures of the models helped me. If you want this result, do this cut.

Book Review: not a good introduction to haircutting
Summary: 3 Stars

I usually like the Dummies books (although I hate their name) because they explain the most basic information. This book seems to be adapted from a hairstylist's textbook and assumes a lot of background knowledge. The directions keep commenting on my needs as a professional, which I have no desire to become. And there are not nearly enough pictures for a topic so visual a topic as haircutting. I will be shopping for other books that are more geared towards the home haircutter.
