Book Review: I Finaly Get It Summary: 5 Stars
I have only recently purchased this book, so I can't give an example of how well it has affected my long term playing, but as far as how much I have learned in only a few short weeks is nothing short of fantastic.
Barret teaches in such a way that makes learning the fretboard and note relationships seem so basic and easy, it makes me wonder why it has taken me so long to understand even some of the absolute basics.
I have learned more about root note relationships and their positions in the first 4 chapters of this book than any other book I have owned, not to say the information isn't in the other books, but it's the way Barrett goes about getting you to learn it.
Thanks Barret, 5 stars, and can't wait to get the next book.
P.S.
I also showed my brother this book, who by the way already has a great knowledge of the fretboard and note relationships and he was so impressed at the teaching methods used in this book that he wanted me to get him a copy, so the book is well suited for both beginner and advanced players.
Book Review: This is a must have! Summary: 5 Stars
So I have been playing guitar for approximately a year and a half now. Originally I was looking for music books to help supplement my weekly half hour guitar lesson. During this period I have purchased a lot of books and dvds. By far this has been the greatest investment! When I first started playing the guitar the fretboard looked so daunting; so many notes! I spent a lot of time memorizing all the triad shapes and even the "CAGED" sequence.
Over the past month I have put my best effort to follow the instructions of how to use this book and in a month my knowledge and my ability to play guitar has increased substantially! I have been really impressed. Honestly, it does take effort to stick with this book especially when you continually have the practice the scales. If you really want to become a better guitar player then practicing all the examples is required and it will definitely pay off, as it has for me.
This is the first review that I have ever written about anything I have ever purchased. I am very happy with this purchase.
Book Review: Pretty awesome. Summary: 5 Stars
Some time ago, I developed the bad habit of learning pieces by memorizing measures note by note.
Learning new pieces became a huge, arduous task which made playing frustrating instead of joyful.
I spent a lot of time wishing I could play new pieces freely, and improvise by actually using the little bit of music theory I know instead of the guesswork I rely on.
I just finally wanted to know what I was doing.
So, I bought the book. After a month of picking the book up, learning stuff, applying, and then putting it down...I'm really just blown away.
Intuitively, I knew there were some patterns on the fretboard. But, I had no idea how deeply they went or how they connected with theory.
My site-reading has improved already, it's so much easier to learn new pieces. I'm hoping improvisation will come with more work!
If you get the book, and put in a little work, you will be happy.
I'll agree with the rest of the reviewers -- the book is pretty awesome.
Book Review: adding to the chorus Summary: 5 Stars
Since 1969 when I first started learning guitar, I have accumulated (count 'em!) about four feet of instructional books. Despite hours of pouring over this stack, I STILL didn't have a sense for the fretboard. Most of what I play are chords to sing along with and a few pieces I have memorized.
I'm on vacation studying Tagliarino's book and in a few days feel like I FINALLY have a sense for the fretboard. It is rare to find a great teacher, and even rarer to find a book that is thought out to meet the needs of the learner.
This book presents in an orderly manner that gives one a sense for patterns inherent in the fretboard a stepwise approach to learning the fretboard. There are multiple 'homework' assignments with an answer key in the back. Tagliarino's suggestions for practice are also exactly what I have wanted for years.
So, add this 5 star review to the chorus. As far as I am concerned, if it isn't already, add this book to the classics of instructional classics
